'😡Kern runs on oil': as California confronts climate crisis, one county is ready to drill #ClimateAction theguardian.com/us-news/2021/m…
This week the county approved an ordinance that would allow thousands of new wells to be drilled over the next 15 years. The decision comes despite deep opposition from local farmers and environmental groups #ClimateEmergency
Farmers voiced concerns about how the land, water, and air would be affected, while justice advocates highlighted how increased pollution would take the harshest toll on the most vulnerable.#ClimateAction
Each year, the American Lung Association ranks cities in the region among the worst in the US for air quality and gives the county an F rating for both ozone and particle pollution. More than 30% of kids under 17 are diagnosed with asthma in Kern
Mercedes Macias, a senior organizer with the Sierra Club who lives and works in Kern county, says advocates will begin pushing the state to crack down on the county.
California is facing the effects of the climate crisis on multiple fronts – from drought to coastal erosion to record-setting wildfires. Meanwhile, the state has set some of the country’s most ambitious goals to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels

#MedyaAbartıyor Nearly 20 percent of households in Turkey have no electricity as the price of utilities has skyrocketed in recent years. duvarenglish.com/turkish-govt-i…
Anger and criticism on social media
“A year ago I was paying maximum 300 liras to heat my 2+1 apartment. This winter, I have had to pay an average of 700 liras each month,” a retired real estate agent from Ankara told Duvar English
Meanwhile, opposition-controlled municipalities such as Istanbul and Ankara have launched campaigns such as “Askıda Fatura” (Bill Pending), where well-off residents show solidarity and anonymously help financially struggling individuals by paying off their utility bills.

Because the Turkish government controls which journalists are allowed to visit Afrin, the stories published by the pro-AKP publications are very similar to what was being published in the NYT. It is striking that the NYT opted not to cover human rights abuses in #Afrin
Several weeks ago, the Islamist Turkish daily newspaper Yeni Şafak cited a New York Times piece, praising Turkey’s presence in the Afrin province in northern Syria.

Yeni Şafak has a reputation as a pro-AKP newspaper with an established record of publishing hate speech
At first, this story appeared to be yet another false narrative published in furtherance of Turkey’s military aims. I assumed Yeni Şafak was only citing the ‘good part’ of the article from the NYT, and must have been leaving out the all-important context.#Afrin

New Zealand also acted much quicker in implementing strict measures to limit travels and enforce social isolation and distancing to prevent the import cases and community spread early on.
“Our team of five million has both sacrificed and achieved a huge amount in just under 11 weeks as the world reckoned with, and continues to reckon with, a virus that went from obscurity at the start of the year to a global pandemic that will linger,” New Zealand PM Ardern told
“As it spread rapidly around the world, we all saw people losing their loved ones and their livelihoods at a rate that was never acceptable to us. And so here in New Zealand we went hard and early with a single plan that had a dual purpose — and to protect lives and livelihoods.”

Rethink or reset? Joe Biden's dilemma over Mohammed bin Salman
US president has chosen to ‘recalibrate’ relations with Saudi Arabia, but some say a rupture is required #Khashoggi
theguardian.com/world/2021/mar…
This guy has waged war in the south of Saudi Arabia and created the worst humanitarian crisis that is not only a stain on Saudi Arabia but also on the US, on everybody who helped the Saudis wage this war. It’s still ongoing,” Abdullah Alaoudh, a Saudi academic said.
“Imagine he is now only a crown prince. Imagine he would rule for the next 40 years and be a king. What would he do?#Khashoggi

Wisdom the albatross, the world's oldest known wild bird, has another chick at age 70❤
The remarkable bird has outlived mating partners, and even the biologist who first placed a band on her in 1956
theguardian.com/environment/20…
Wisdom hatched the chick on 1 February in the Midway Atoll national wildlife refuge in the North Pacific, where more than a million albatross return to nest each year.
“We believe Wisdom has had other mates,” US Fish and Wildlife Service biologist Dr Beth Flint said in the organization’s article on medium. “Though albatross mate for life, they may find new partners if necessary – for example if they outlive their first mate.”

Nearly 25,000 people out of at least 70,000 who crossed the US-Mexico border and were sent back, under the policy known more formally as the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), are now eligible to be reprocessed on the US side.
The DHS under Trump had said of migrants forced to wait that “Mexico will provide them with all appropriate humanitarian protections for the duration of their stay”.
Yorlene, a 32-year-old Honduran mother traveling with daughters aged 10 and 15, who asked to withhold her full name over security fears, had not found such help when sent back across the border to an area that the state department advises Americans to avoid because of crime
