Hey #preWGA re-posting a thread for tips on TV writing fellowship application essays and cover letters...
/8) Above all else, you want to tell the best story about yourself that you can. They will judge you on this essay before they even look at your script.
/8) Make sure that speaks to what made you the writer you are today. How did that experience shape your view of the world and your voice as a writer?
/8) Make the story short but compelling. Pretend it's a writing sample (because it is).
/8) Bonus points if the theme of your personal story matches the theme of the sample you are submitting.
/8) Somewhere in your letter, you want to be able to say something to the effect, "I had this particular experience, and that's why I like to write characters that also have this kind of experience, and here's a pilot sample that demonstrates that."
/8) Answer: What are some shows that they air that have resonated with you and why? What shows of theirs are you dying to write on and why?
/8) Answer: What do you think you can contribute to their program that no one else can?
/8) Wrap it up in some clever way that cinches up the theme of the essay.
There's no magic bullet for TV fellowship applications, but after speaking with many of the administrators of these programs via panels I've put on and hosted, these seem to be the common elements I've come across.
