Admission and Scholarship in Japan 🇯🇵 (Part A)

You know how we do it guys😍.

Just tag your friends and families, tell them that Japan is here.

Follow me as we dissect the opportunities in Japan.
There are different kinds of scholarship in Japan. But MEXT scholarship is the most robust scholarship for International students for Msc and PhD.

MEXT scholarship can be divided into two categories:

A. Embassy Recommended MEXT
B. University Recommended MEXT

Stay with me😉.
A. Embassy Recommended MEXT:

This Scholarship opens around April-May every year. All countries that have diplomatic ties with Japan are eligible, including most African countries.

Let's use Nigeria as an example to illustrate how to apply for this scholarship.
There are about 4 stages in this scholarship.

STAGE 1: This stage consists of the following:

(i) Go to the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria website (ng.emb-japan.go.jp/itprtop_en/ind…)

(ii) Click 'Education & Scholarships' as shown below: Image
On this page, you will see that MEXT scholarship for Teacher Training Students 2021 has just closed.

This page will be updated by April-May 2021 when MEXT Scholarship for 2021 Embassy Recommendation. opens. So, stay in touch. Image
(iii) Follow the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria on Facebook(web.facebook.com/EmbassyofJapan…). They will announce when the scholarship opens as well as give you all the school links and forms to download and fill.

In the form, you will be expected to fill in 3 names of potential supervisors
to work with. Start sending email to supervisors in your field now so that your chances can increase. If you impress a supervisor, he can send you all further info and also follow up on your scholarship.

Also, you will be asked to submit the following alongside the form:
a. A research proposal
b. English proficiency letter from your school
c. Notarised student copy of your Transcript.

You will have to get these documents and others as hard copies, and then send them via courier to the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, located in Maitama, Abuja.
You can call the Embassy to discuss when the application opens. There are guidelines on how to arrange all documents from the website and Facebook page. Make sure you understand.
Many applications will be reviewed and shortlisted by the embassy.

If you are shortlisted, you will move to stage 2.

STAGE 2: In this stage, you will be called or sent an email to invite you for an exam. The exam is meant to access your basic communication skills in English as
well as the Japanese language🤣

I know what you are thinking at this point. Don't be scared.

The aim of this test is to know the number of months you will be enrolled in the Japanese program before you start your Msc/PhD. This program is usually 3 months to 1 year,
depending on how fast you can learn.

So, if you score zero on the Japanese test, you are most likely going to be enrolled for 1-year Japanese language before commencing your program. Note that you will be given a certificate after the 1-year language program in Japan.
STAGE 3: This is the oral interview stage where they will ask you about the documents you filled. They will ask you why you chose Japan, supervisors, undergrad. degree courses, research proposal, etc.

So, make sure you read everything you filled and do some online research.
STAGE 4: Succesful candidates will be issued an official award letter.

It is this award letter you will now use to officially apply for admission to any school in Japan. Of course, many professors will be willing to accept you when they know you already have the
funding letter.

Also, note that you can get as many admissions as possible using this letter. But, MEXT will choose just one when you are ready to leave.

Alright guys, that's the end of Part A.
In Part B, we will explore the University Recommended MEXT, which @Chilometric used to get a fully-funded scholarship at Tohoku University, Japan.

Tag your friends and wait for Part B.
