Syrian Kurdish National Council (KNC) said in a statement they’ve celebrated Newroz in several areas in Afrin.

1. Barzani appears to have agreed to legitimise the status quo in Afrin in return for KNC opening offices there
2. PYD-KNC talks practically dead.

Sharran in NW Afrin:
Here is more background on the meeting between Barzani and head of Syrian opposition in early March:
PYD leader Aldar Khelil appears to refer to the normalisation by KNC in Afrin:
“It is not possible to agree given what happened to Afrin. We cannot accept it.”
One very interesting comparison between KDP’s reaction to Afrin vs Kirkuk:

They’ve considered Kirkuk an ‘occupied’ city since Iraqi forces retaken it from Kurdish forces in 2017.
But KDP has refused to call Afrin an ‘occupied’ city, referring to it as Turkish-controlled.

- At least 100,000 Kurds have been displaced.
- 200,000+ Arabs, mostly from East Ghuta were brought in.
- 1000s of Turkmen in.
- Over 3000 cases of kidnapping & abuses.

The city’s demography has been completely altered.
Facts about Afrin pre-2018:

80-90% of the population was Kurdish
10-20% were Arabs
1% Turkmen and Arminians

The Afrin region boated more than 13 million olive trees.

Afrin contained the lowest number of mosques in Syria (for socio-historical reasons).

All this has changed.
