My chronically ill, disabled self won't be vaccinated until summer. My family, however, has been vaccinated. They're celebrating with a vacation.

This is callous.
This is dangerous.
This is ableism.
I love my family, and I have made it clear to them why this is NOT something to do if you love someone who is chronically ill or disabled.

They're doing it anyway.
I'm not tweeting this to air my family's dirty laundry. I'm tweeting this because I don't think it's unique to my family. I think this is how a lot of nondisabled ppl feel and act.
And yeah it fucking hurts that they would sit through my entire explanation and then do it anyway. Just wait six fucking months and reevaluate. Like, we're so close to getting a handle on things. JUST. FUCKING. WAIT. It's not hard: delayed gratification saves goddamn lives!!!
If I get sick and if I die -- if my chronically ill and disabled friends get sick and if they die -- it's not because WE'VE been taking risks; it's because other ppl have been making choices to participate in the chain of transmission and raise our risk without our consent.
It breaks my heart that some of those ppl making those choices are members of my family.

Sure, there's a chance they won't contract or transmit COVID, but they're still voluntarily participating in unnecessary dangerous behavior.
If someone drives drunk but manages not to hit anything or kill anyone, we don't just brush it off; they did something that put ppl at risk. Going on vacation when high risk folks remain unvaccinated just because YOU feel invincible isn't all that different imo.

So BC is starting to vaccinate "clinically extremely vulnerable" ppl, but most of us with complicated health profiles won't find our conditions on the list. We continue to be invisible and the realities of living with chronic illness and disability ignored.
I maintain: if triage protocols frame your death as a foregone conclusion, you belong on the vaccine priority list.
If you're one minor complication away from losing your tenuous toehold on survivable disability in this capitalist, eugenicist nightmare of a society, you belong on the priority list.

Me: *gets out my wallet to pay for my haircut*

My stylist: no, no, it's on me!

Me: *radiating confusion*

Him: coming out haircut!

Me: is that a thing?!

Him: it should be.

Me: 🥺🥺🥺

Him: congratulations! And thanks for sharing that with me.
Same cut again -- but with feeling. Photo shows Corin, a masc-presenting white person with short
(Obviously the tip on my next cut is going to be the price of this "free" one but still.)

I'd like to propose an end to the phrases "people of all abilities" and "regardless of ability" in lieu of disability. If you're talking about disability, say disability or disability status.

Here's why:
First, institutions and nondisabled ppl go out of their way to avoid saying the word "disability". Look, the Voldemort treatment doesn't do disabled ppl any favours; on the contrary, it means that we have to put up with a never-ending stream of patronizing euphemisms.
Second, it's just more accurate and direct. With respect to including disability in JEDI, we're not really talking about people of all abilities; we're talking about disability as a social construct and category of social difference like race or gender.

Other things my geography students are doing their final assignments on:

* urbanization and raccoon behaviour

* protest songs and the movement of ideas during the military dictatorship in Brazil

* digital spaces and the rise of K-pop as a global phenomenon
(Just adding to the list of cool topics, which already included the adaptation of Pokémon cards for North American audiences.)
@ramskelet0n A new animal geographer, perhaps?!

Lemme talk to the US Americans for a second about #KillBillC7.

Look, I grew up in the US, so I know that Canada holds a special place in the hearts of US leftists, but the Canada that ppl threaten to move to every election and the ACTUAL country of Canada are different places.
The ACTUAL country of Canada has a long history of institutionalization and sterilization.

The ACTUAL country of Canada passed a toothless version of the ADA (the ACA) 19 years AFTER the US. (Do the math: we got our "ADA lite" in 2019!)
In cases of discrimination, the ACTUAL country of Canada offers completely inadequate "protection" through a slow and retraumatizing Human Rights Tribunal process riddled with barriers that disproportionately impact disabled ppl, making it an ineffectual option for redress.

Because of the importance of PT in an EDSer's life, I was exponentially more nervous coming out to my physio than my family. The conversation went a little something like...
Her, merrily stabbing me with IMS needles: so what's new?

Me: ok, are you ready for me to come out to you?

Her: what?! OMG tell me.

Me: so I figured out that I'm trans--

Her: Shut up. NO WAY!!! That is so exciting! I am so happy for you! Tell me everything!!!

Thus far only one person has had a lukewarm response, but it turns out she was mostly worried about my name because she didn't want to find out that she'd been friends with a Chad for the last 15 years! (Lol I mean fair...?! But Corin is already gender-neutral and I like it.)
