I usually keep my tweets upbeat, but today is a low point in my career as an academic researcher.

The budget of our GCRF Hub project is to be cut by ~70% - after it was awarded and staff appointed. The jobs of ECRs in UK and worldwide are at risk. I'm angry & depressed. (1/3)
These are scientists with world-leading expertise in infectious disease, AMR, and genomic surveillance, many of whom have made important contributions to @CovidGenomicsUK and related projects worldwide. How can we countenance losing their skills and expertise now? (2/3)
This cut will decimate one of the world's largest inter-disciplinary projects for understanding & mitigating the risks of zoonosis in food production in Asia. Let that sink in. It's hard to conceive of anything more counter-productive. (3/3)
Thank you everyone for your messages of solidarity, sympathy and kindness, they are appreciated.

After many weeks hard work by the team I'm delighted to share our preliminary analysis of the lineage structure and importation dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 in the UK. @CovidGenomicsUK

This is an initial descriptive summary of the genetic structure of the UK epidemic. We have not evaluated the past or future effectiveness of public health interventions relating to UK travel and the report does not comment on those.
We detect >1300 independently-introduced transmission lineages. However we expect this number to be an under-estimate.

The rate and source of introduction of SARS-CoV-2 lineages into the UK changed substantially and rapidly through time.
