Hot take but the de-emphasis on electoral politics is why the modern left will never win over black people
Basically unless you are going to wait until all Black people Gen X and older die off, it’s just empirically true that most Black people are opposed to leftist politics and this kind of rhetoric is exactly why
Telling a generation of people who were literally assaulted, brutalized, and murdered fighting for the right to vote that electoral politics is not a primary method of change literally spits in the face of their struggle
What’s worse is taking the methods of action that they practically invented (e.g. mutual aid, direct action) and acting as if they aren’t designed to work in tandem with electoral politics
Race is inherently political. When you walk through a white supremacist state as a black person you are always particularly vulnerable to whatever the state does. Mutual aid and direct action are critical but they are mitigatory responses to a structural problem
I cannot sit here and say that electoral politics isn’t to some extent mitigatory as well but removing from office the people who support harmful carcereal policies will always be more transformative than mutual aid to victims of carceral system after the fact
I also want to be clear that when I am talking about electoral politics I don’t just mean who’s in the White House or controls the Senate, I’m talking about who gets to be a sheriff or prosecutor. If you support prison abolition, electoral politics should matter to you
The most important thing that happened in Georgia last year was not the Presidential or Senate election, but the replacement of a sheriff…
This is a clear example of community organizing and conscious raising geared toward electoral politics. I don’t understand how anyone well-versed in the tactics of Black and brown activists can say things like this
I am only one person though so I cannot claim to speak for all black people but this something I have been grappling with for a while so I can only hope that leftists think more critically about who their political rhetoric actually includes
And as a final thought, if you really don’t think electoral politics matter, why are Republicans still working day and night to take the voting rights of black people away?
Jesus Christ this was so long, I love being annoying and sanctimonious 🥰
