If you're an ER doc and you complain about "drug seekers" on Twitter, you probably need a new profession. People who struggle w/substance use have a disease and deserve compassion. Also, not everyone who presents to the ER in chronic or acute pain is lying/misleading you. 1/5
Before I had diagnoses for my pain, I occasionally showed up in the ER because a) I had never experienced such severe pain and it scared me, and b) I had other complaints and wanted diagnostic imaging, blood work, etc. I wasn't drug seeking, but boy did they accuse me of it. 2/5
Like, half the time all I requested was a Toradol (an NSAID, not an opioid) injection. Once, when I was 26, in a serious pain flare (and didn't get prescription pain meds at the time), I went to the ER begging for relief. The doc made me cry, accusing me of faking for drugs. 3/5
When I pointed out that state records tracking controlled substance presriptions showed I hadn't had a script filled since I had surgery quite some time ago, and that I hadn't been going to local ERs for pain meds, he got huffy and stomped out, never coming back. 4/5
Anyway, even if I were having problems with substance use and drug seeking, I didn't deserve the doc's vitriol. And people with a legitimate disease (substance use), deserve kindness, not for docs to complain about them online. Seriously, find a new profession. 5/5
Since this thread is popping off a little, let me share my friend's fundraiser for a wheelchair, which they really need for quality of life.
