The Intercept has internal NYPD documents which shed light on the secretive “Strategic Response Group” which was deployed against Black Lives Matter protestors last summer. theintercept.com/2021/04/07/nyp…
The Intercept notes that the SRG “stand out for their confrontational and aggressive tactics.” Here is a video I shot on June 3, when SRG suddenly officers appeared on bikes wearing body armor to kettle peaceful protestors in the rain.
This is what it looked like as they arrived:
"On paper, the SRG’s formations may seem well organized, but in practice, their execution is violent and chaotic." theintercept.com/2021/04/07/nyp…
This is really important reporting that shows how a specially trained group of cops used advanced tactics and tools in order to break up peaceful anti-police protests. Bravo @JohnBolgerNYC @alicesperi theintercept.com/2021/04/07/nyp…

NEW: ‘Bro Culture’ at Camera Maker Verkada Pushed Profits, Parties

This story is based on interviews with eight current Verkada employees and 15 former employees.

(w/ @mcbridesg @rj_gallagher @BrodyFord_)

bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
In-office parties -- even during the pandemic -- were prone to excessive drinking and occasional drug use, according to the employees.

“Verkada gives frat boys a bad name,” one former sales employee said.

bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Employees have told Bloomberg that the inattention to data protection was emblematic of a larger “bro culture” that was sophomoric and sales obsessed, and which tolerated the harassment of women, frequent partying and misleading marketing claims. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

LEAKED RECORDINGS: Audio tapes of internal Parler meetings reveal conservative donor Rebekah Mercer is writing “big checks” to bring the site back online.

AUDIO: “We've written big checks these past couple days, with respect to the fact that we have now two data centers….So far who’s writing all the checks for this stuff is Rebekah Mercer. So that’s the support she has for Parler.”

NEWS: One of the world’s largest technology suppliers has stopped selling Verkada security cameras following a devastating hack.
bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
“CDW is one of, if not the largest, Verkada partner and a top means for selling to end users, so losing CDW would be a material problem for Verkada,” said Conor Healy, government director at IPVM, a video surveillance industry research firm. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
According to an archived version of CDW’s website on Jan. 18, CDW sold 68 Verkada products. On Monday, a search for “Verkada” on CDW’s website returned no results. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Cloudflare has pushed back on the claim in our story that its Verkada cameras used facial recognition technology. See these claimz from a Cloudflare blog post, and in an emailed statement.

The reality: Cloudflare's Verkada cameras *did* use facial recognition technology. ImageImage
For example, see this photo from inside Verkada's internal system. Here, you can see an employee in Cloudflare's Singapore office being tracked using facial recognition. (Face blurred for privacy.) Image
If you have any doubt this is from Cloudflare - check out the bottom right of the photo. It says "NET Listed," which is Cloudflare's stock ticker on the NYSE. Read the story here: bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

SCOOP: Hackers have breached Verkada, a security camera company. Hackers were able to access LIVE FEEDS of 150,000 cameras from Tesla, Cloudflare, schools, hospitals, prisons, and thousands of other organizations. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
In a video seen by Bloomberg, a Verkada camera inside Florida hospital Halifax Health showed what appeared to be eight hospital staffers tackling a man and pinning him to a bed. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Another video, shot inside a Tesla warehouse in Shanghai, shows workers on an assembly line. The hackers said they obtained access to 222 cameras in Tesla factories and warehouses. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

New: I profiled Amy Peikoff, an Ayn Rand devotee who says she eats more than a pound of meat every day. She is also Parler’s Chief Policy Officer, and writes the rules that decide what is allowed on the site.

bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
In 2018, Peikoff appeared on Tucker Carlson’s show. Carlson wondered why some Amazon employees were on food stamps, while Jeff Bezos was the richest person in the world. Peikoff’s rebuttal was that the government should eliminate food stamps. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Since joining Parler last year, Peikoff has crafted a set of rules that aims to remove content or ban accounts at “an absolute minimum.” bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
