Last September, I received a reporting grant from The Thakur Foundation @thakurfdn @d_s_thakur to do some stories related to clinical trials in India. I’m compiling them here in one thread for easy access/read. (If anyone wants a pdf copy of any story please DM; happy to share)
1. India has a clinical trials registry, created to increase transparency and accountability of clinical trials in the country. But how good is it? (Not very). science.thewire.in/the-sciences/c…
2. Back when Covid-19 vaccine trials had started, the whole process was shrouded in secrecy. Not much has changed when it comes to transparency from this government. In my opinion, this is one reason for vaccine hesitancy in the country. sciencemag.org/news/2020/11/i…
3. Most clinical trials in India don’t publish their results. Why is this bad? Results are vital to build evidence on whether something works or not, & is safe. If not published, you don't know. It's a waste of money & a disservice to people who volunteered bmj.com/content/371/bm…
4. What happens when someone suffers from a serious adverse event in a clinical trial (say, hospitalisation/death)? This explainer tried to find out (note how there's no provision to close the loop with the person who actually suffered) science.thewire.in/health/covid-1…
5. Clinical trials can be life changing for cancer patients in India. But there’s a gap between the kinds of trials we do vs what we need, given the kinds of cancers prevalent in India. Also, there’s a huge geographic disparity in access to trials. theprint.in/health/indias-…
6. Ethics committees are key to good clinical trials. They’re sort of the local regulatory body seeing whether trials are being done as they should. What does a committee do, what's lacking, and why do ethical violations keep happening? This is a podcast sunoindia.in/the-suno-india…
7. Few ethics committees in India visit clinical trial sites to monitor them. In this interview, an ethics expert tells me what mistakes get uncovered when they visit a site. If you find mistakes, you can correct them. If you're not even looking, well... science.thewire.in/health/how-do-…
Also, if anyone has any tips/suggestions for under-reported issues in clinical research in India, my DM is open.
