Prof. Kathy Charmaz was an Occupational Therapist and Medical Sociologist whose PhD was supervised by Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss (the fathers of Grounded Theory). She credited Glaser as the one who actually taught her Grounded Theory methodology.

When I was doing my Master’s Thesis at @LivUniPsych, I decided to follow a Classical Grounded Theory approach, where my supervisor and the rest of the research group were decidedly Charmazian.

My approach to Grounded Theory has developed over time and with more formalised training. And I have published Grounded Theory methodology papers for use in cross-disciplinary health research and for non-traditional data from the performing arts, literature, and visual media

To this day, I still consider myself a ‘Classical’ Grounded Theorist, but what Professor Charmaz did was make critique of the highly revered (and often feared) methodology, acceptable, and for that, I am entirely and eternally grateful.
