Finally finished catching up on @SConnections Inclusive Practice in Action Conference - an amazing and thought-provoking set of discussions and interviews. Anyone looking at where to start/continue confronting diversity and inclusion within #musiceducation this is for you #IPIA21
Some highlights:
1⃣ from @AsifSadiq: 'BAME' is too broad a term-it assumes that all non-white people have the same needs
2⃣ when someone shares an experience or perception of racism/discrimination, you don't always have to provide a solution - just listen and let them be heard
3⃣ from @Muna_Abdi_Phd: there are no safe spaces for those who have experienced discrimination.
4⃣ as a white person, you CANNOT speak on experiences of racism. you CAN use your privilege to educate other white people about their own privilege
5⃣ from @drmelmarie: challenge what you know and how that translates to knowledge. active learning and performance based learning allow students to apply what they know and reimagine what knowledge is.
6⃣ from @cdndebs: acknowledge the history and role of musicians from marginalised groups e.g. The Lion Sleeps Tonight…
7⃣ Admit your own limits and bring in specialists and experts where you have gaps in knowledge.
8⃣ from @iAmMissJacqui: creative work can flow without the constant need to focus on race/disability [or other marginalisations]

9⃣ as a teacher, if you don't know how to adapt or acknowledge that appropriately, ask the individual how they would like to be supported.
🔟 from @girlsrocklondon: removing the goal of musical perfection allows more space for creative self-expression and opens new possibilities for mistakes.
