“Gun violence in this country is an epidemic, and it’s an international embarrassment,” @POTUS #MoreThanThoughtsAndPrayers
.@POTUS on untraceable ghost guns:

"I want to see these kits treated as firearms under the Gun Control Act... to require that the seller and manufacturers make the key parts with serial numbers and run background checks on the buyers when they walk in to buy that package."
.@POTUS points out that between the mass shootings in Atlanta and Boulder, “...there were more than 850 additional shootings, 850, that took the lives of more than 250 people and left 500 wounded." #MoreThanThoughtsAndPrayers
“It’s long past time that we act. ...Folks, this is just the start. We have a lot of work to do. We aren't going to give up now. The fact that we have so many dying from gun violence everyday is a blemish on our character as a nation,” @POTUS #MoreThanThoughtsAndPrayers
"I'm under no illusions about how hard it is to solve the problem of gun violence, but there is work for the @TheJusticeDept to do and we intend to do it,” Attorney General Merrick Garland #MoreThanThoughtsAndPrayers

GOP Kansas Majority Leader Gene Suellentrop was arrested for driving 90 mph down the wrong side of a highway, and had twice the legal level of alcohol in his system. He then suggested a fight with the arresting officer and called him "donut boy." #ksleg cnn.com/2021/04/09/us/…
Details are just coming to light because police didn't complete an offense report during or after Suellentrop's arrest on suspicion of DUI, fleeing police, and driving the wrong way on an interstate. Police also denied most of media requests for arrest and investigation records.
And yes, he has an A rating from the @NRA. Come get your good guy with a gun, boys! Image

NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre back on the stand in the org’s bankruptcy trial. He just testified that after firing the NRA’s third-highest-ranking exec, he was given an agreement for $720K a year for two years, and then $220K more in year three to “keep him in goodwill toward the NRA.”
NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre testified that he fired his chief of staff for receiving $54K in excess benefit transactions. Earlier, LaPierre admitted to receiving $300K in excess benefits himself. #NRABankruptcyTrial
NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre's own lawyer has now moved to strike the NRA head's testimony three times.

Not a sign that things are going well... #NRABankruptcyTrial

NEW: These executive orders are a huge victory for the gun safety movement. For years, survivors and advocates, including @MomsDemand volunteers, took on NRA-backed lawmakers who refused to act. Today, President Biden made it clear those days are over. nytimes.com/2021/04/07/us/…
Ghost guns may be the scariest and quickest growing public safety threat in the country, allowing anyone to manufacture a deadly weapon with minimal effort and time. The Biden administration is showing they are going to treat this like the emergency it is and address it head on.
Also, the administration will modify multiple federal grant programs to increase funding for community violence intervention programs. Community-based violence intervention programs work, and the administration is ensuring they'll have the funding they need to save lives.

Opening to #nrabankruptcytrial:

Ackerman (former NRA marketing firm paid millions by the *nonprofit*): “The NRA’s leadership has repeatedly told its members to stand up and fight, but the NRA’s leadership is trying to run from the New York Attorney General as fast as they can.”
More Ackerman: “NRA leaders are asking the court to ignore sovereignty... It is consistent with who the NRA has sadly become, a nonprofit in name only who ostensibly exists to defend the #2A, but in reality is driven to enrich management and keep them in control at all costs.”
NYAG opening: “Evidence will show the process LaPierre followed to file these bankruptcy cases is a master class in bad faith and dishonest conduct. If the NRA faces an existential crisis by the bankruptcy, it was a crisis brought on by LaPierre, his enablers and their choices.”

👋 Good morning. Today is the first day of the @NRA’s trial in bankruptcy court. For those of you who can’t wait, here are some disturbing excerpts from Wayne LaPierre’s deposition (filed over the weekend). #nrabankruptcytrial
LaPierre acknowledged being gifted - by a NRA *business* partner - use of a 100+ foot yacht with a full staff, for personal vacations in the Bahamas. He testified he used the yacht around once a year, and it included “two or three or four staff people,” as well as a cook.
The yacht had “several staterooms” and a “jet boat.” LaPierre never offered to pay for the use of the yacht, nor did he disclose it on his conflict of interest form.

Get your popcorn ready! Starting Monday, the @NRA is going to bankruptcy court and it’ll be the first time their executives face cross examination. Here’s a preview of some of the fun to come…
washingtonpost.com/politics/nra-p…
In a deposition, an NRA board member confirmed that the NRA paid a single law firm $17 MILLION in the 90 days leading up to the NRA filing for bankruptcy. That’s always a good sign.
That same NRA board member said of Wayne LaPierre -- the head of the NRA -- that he’s “known Wayne such a long, long time, and he’s in such a hole, I don’t see how he gets out.”

Fraud sure has a way of burying you, doesn’t it, Wayne?
