As a non-manga reader who is familiar with the events and the ending of the Attack on Titan's story, here are some of my thoughts which have been asked for so here ya go.

Be civil!

SPOILER THREAD:

#aot139
The main problem I see with people disliking the ending is they believe Eren's charcater was wasted.

For me it was the ending that befit his charcater whilst also not disregarding the cruel world they live in. ImageImageImageImage
Eren is a 19 year old who has always been highly emotional to the point he was called edgy. Since childhood he constantly promised to kill all titans, a glimpse into his childish mindset which is kinda psychopathic. He's always loved his friends Armin and Mikasa above all. ImageImageImageImage
Him confessing to Armin that he wants to be with Mikasa is his most human moment in the entire story. He is emotionally selfish as you'd expect by someone who is 19 and in love. However he also knows it's wrong which is why he only says it to Armin, his closest friend. ImageImageImageImage
Instigating his mothers death was something he needed to do for this to all happen. Without his mothers death he would never have got the founder and would never have been able to achieve his goal or create a CHANCE for one.

Also as he says he needed Bertolt alive. Image
Eren's goal to make himself the enemy so that the world will unite with heroes which protect his friends makes perfect sense.

However that's far too idealist for AoT. It fits for Eren to believe this as he is an idealist and so the tragedy of his EXACT plan failing makes sense. ImageImageImageImage
Armin has always been the one who has been recognised to be the person to save humanity. So yet again making sense for Eren wanting save his close friends and make them the heroes. ImageImageImageImage
This was clearly Eren's goal and it adds so much clarity to previous scenes/panels. The moments when Gruger tells Grisha to save Armin and Mikasa was a massive hint towards Eren's plan and his goal to prioity to save his friends and people. ImageImage
Eren's GOAL ending without the success envisioned is not the fault of his character but the world of AOT being pretty nihilistic. He tried to give them hope and a chance but failed. I always expected this to happen otherwise it would betray the tone and theme of the story. ImageImageImageImage
Believing that the entire world would simply move on and forget the war they've had for over 100 years would be idealistic and unrealistic. It'll take a really long time for things to change if at all.

Eren only believes this path is the best CHANCE. ImageImageImageImage
The strong theme that prevails here is human nature and how it's been depicted in the story.

Constantly fighting and conflicting. It doesn't matter who has powers or who rules, us humans just "fight." It's an extremely nihilistic view of the world that's always been present. ImageImageImageImage
Eren's life was NOT wasted. His sacrifice & plan has created an opportunity for peace. His sacrifice has also made it that the Eldians can no longer fear themselves and that don't have to fear them. He has made Eldians SAFER too. Not the success wanted, but it's something. ImageImageImage
Ymir loving King Fritz was because she finally saw and understood love through Mikasa's final act with Eren.

Very twisted which epistomsies the horrible life she had that she believes she loves a man who was actually so cruel to her. ImageImageImageImage
The beauty of Levi's scene is fitting for him to be met with comrades, he of everyone has been loyal to his duty. Nothing complicated here. ImageImageImage
I don't really like the end Historia got but I also do understand why it had to be that way. I would have liked her to play a more active role rather than just being pregnant. ImageImage
This is a beautiful ending for another reason. 139 means rebirth which happened in this last chapter with a new age happening yet there was no chapter 140, a number that means freedom. This is represented in 139 with freedom failing, war continuing and Eren dying. ImageImageImageImage
Since I'm not a managa reader and don't know the ins and outs take my views as someone who has just seen the main info.

The anime adaption for those who dislike the managa ending will maybe be better. However for me I LIKED it!

Being able to satisfy everyone would be IMPOSSIBLE for a story as dark as AoT. However, I've noticed that the split reception has started to grow more towards people liking it already. This is something I believe that over time will get the appreciation it deserves. ImageImageImageImage
