My perspective on racial injustice really began to change about 7 years ago when I began to actually listen to Black people. The stories I heard made me uncomfortable..
Their experiences of our society didn’t match my experiences. The systems that worked so well for me often worked against them.
The more I listened, and the more I studied, the more I came to realize that the problem was with the systems. The racial disparity was real. The racism that I thought was a thing of the past was actually still a really big problem.
I had to admit that I had been wrong. I had to admit that my privilege blinded me to the experiences of people who didn’t have it. That wasn’t easy.
Love demands we listen to our neighbors. Love demands that we admit when we’re wrong. Love recognizes that the system doesn’t work until it works for all of us.
