Take away:
In addition to current up to 4 weeks of vacation per year, the proposal would allow a resident to:
1) take up to 12 weeks of family or medical leave
2) additional family or medical leave with approval from program director on case by case basis.
Tweet 4/13
Effective July 1st 2021, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) mandates training programs to establish policies accommodating reasonable leaves of absence from residency and fellowship training for personal or familial needs.
Tweet 5/13
Following this mandate, the American Board of Radiology (ABR) sought comments regarding the residency service time requirement, including considerations of family or medical leave.
Tweet 6/13
The ABR (March, 2021) stated “Programs may grant up to six weeks parental, caregiver and medical leave during the residency”. This includes care of a newborn, adopted, or foster child, care of an immediate family member or trainee's own serious health condition.

Poll: Question – In your opinion, the limit of family or medical leave (in addition to existing 4 weeks per year) should be?
Tweet 8/13
According to the 1993 Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), eligible employees are allowed up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for family or medical reasons.
Tweet 9/13
The SCARD and the APDR have pledged to a policy of up to 12 weeks of paternal leave for eligible radiology residents of all genders. SCARD suggested paid and APDR stated unpaid leave as per FMLA.
Tweet 10/13
Do you think the proposed 12 weeks of family or medical absence leave should be?
Tweet 11/13
Countless benefits of the paid maternal leave including health of the mother and child, improved infant attachment and child development. Availability of leave for all parents would encourage more equitable parental involvement in childrearing.
Tweet 12/13
Constraining parental leave also impacts on recruitment of women to residency and fellowships, given the specialty training occurs during prime childbearing years.
Tweet 13/13
In the spirit of the FMLA and in line with the with AAP, SCARD, and APDR statements, this editorial by Magudia et. al is published in @ radiology_RSNA supports 12 weeks of parental leave.
