A big difference with Alberta's 4th wave compared to its 3rd wave is the number of cases among people aged 80+, shown by the red line here
To understand what's going on, we need to break down this data a little more... 🧵
The recent surge in case rates among Albertans aged 80+ has not been evenly distributed, geographically.
The North, South and Central health zones have seen disproportionately high cases among this age range, while rates in the Calgary & Edmonton zones have been relatively low.
As a result, the South, North & Central zones (which tend to be more rural) have also seen higher death rates during the 4th wave, compared to the Calgary & Edmonton zones (which are more urban.)
