@GidMK For the clueless:

The diagram above was a summary of bullet holes on WW2 planes that landed after missions. In the decision to increase armor, the Army Air Corp wanted to add armor to the most-hit spots. Abraham Wald suggested adding armor to the places without bullet holes.
@GidMK This flew (pun intended) against conventional wisdom. Wald argued that planes that came back survived being shot in those places. Those planes that didn't...were shot in the clear places. This came to be known as an example of survivor bias.
@GidMK I am incorrect. It was the USN, not the AAC.
