1. One area community self help can make a positive difference is in education. A large % of children, particularly in Northern States, attend public primary & secondary schools. Eg in Kano in 2016, 2. 72 million children were in public primary schools with only 97,000 in private
2. primary schools. That is only 3.4% attend private primary schools. Furthermore, 617,000 teens were in public secondary schools with only 88,000 in private secondary schools. This clearly shows the importance of public basic eduction. If it is poor, it has significant impact
3. on human outcomes. A community can decide to partner with the schools in the neighbourhood/LG to improve learning outcomes in the schools. Eg. 10 to 20 people can come together & contribute funding to assist one public primary school and two secondary (1 female & 1 male) on an
4. ongoing basis. A budget of N500k for a primary & 700k for each secondary School annually can work wonders. It can set up a library & buy new books annually, it can improve the class, pay volunteer teachers were required, fix toilets etc.
5. With N2 million, the standard of at least 3 public schools in each LG can be improved annually on an ongoing basis. In Kano, this will translate to impacting around 110,000 kids in 44 LGS annually. Doable.

1. Bashing Northerners is a full time job for some people on Twitter. The latest is the purported cut off marks for admission into Federal Government Colleges. I don't even know whether the marks are correct, but even if they are, the low cut off marks 4 Northerners are
2. Indicative of many things not just lack of capacity. Many parents across the North send their children to private secondary schools including in those States where the cut off mark is said to be below 20. So, perhaps the FGCs are no longer that attractive.
3. In addition, it is possible parents in rural areas don't even know of these opportunities. The State Ministry's of Education need to do more to make such parents aware of these opportunities.
