Some Interesting Facts About India
Benaras is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. It is believed that the city was founded 5000 years ago by Lord Shiva on the banks of River Ganga. It is also known as ‘City of learning’, ‘Holy city of India’, ‘City of lights’, and ‘Religious capital of India’.
India is the second largest producer of tea in the world, producing an average 9,00,000 tonnes each year with Assam and Darjeeling being exclusive producer of a variety of popular tea.
India has a floating Post office which is in Dal Lake, Srinagar. It was inaugurated in 2011. Surprisingly locals and tourists in Srinagar take a boat ride right up to the post office just to send a postcard to their loved ones
The 2011 Kumbh Mela was the largest gathering of people with over 75 million pilgrims. The gathering was so huge that the crowd was visible from space.
Shampoo was invented in India, not the commercial liquid ones but the method by use of herbs. The word 'shampoo' itself has been derived from the Sanskrit word champu, which means to massage.
In September 2009, India's ISRO Chandrayaan- 1 using its Moon Mineralogy Mapper detected water on the moon for the first time.
Science day in Switzerland is dedicated to the Ex-Indian President, APJ Abdul Kalam. The father of India's missile program had visited Switzerland back in 2006. Upon his arrival, Switzerland declared May 26th as Science Day.
The first rocket in India was transported on a cycle to the Thumba Launching Station in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
India was the first country to develop extraction and purifying techniques of sugar. Many visitors from abroad learned the refining and cultivation of sugar from us.
