Here's a Statement which Sir Lindsay Hoyle @CommonsSpeaker could make on HoC's return. It's within the rules, I imagine. (I can't see how it could not be, anyway.)

@CommonsSpeaker @instituteforgov "There is a public perception, currently, that ministers and members are becoming less attentive than they should be to the veracity of statements they make in the Chamber.

Therefore, and with immediate effect, the following will apply to members and to ministers,...

@CommonsSpeaker @instituteforgov “… including the Prime Minister.

"The Chair will no longer await the return of a minister or member to correct the record over a mis-statement, and will expect it to be dealt with at the time, and not later.

It would be courteous for the member or minister to remain...

@CommonsSpeaker @instituteforgov "... in the Chamber until that matter is resolved.

Where a member raises a Point of Order over an alleged mis-statement, I (or those in the Chair on my behalf) will invariably take that Point of Order as soon as it becomes possible to do so, The member raising the...

@CommonsSpeaker @instituteforgov "... Point of Order, and the member or minister against whom it is raised, should remain in the Chamber until its disposal.

Where no Point of Order is made, I reserve the right to raise the issue of Order from the Chair, so that an (alleged) mis-statement can be corrected

@CommonsSpeaker @instituteforgov "…immediately. I have asked those who take the Chair on my behalf to hold to this same practice.

The Speaker has the duty to ensure that statements made by members and ministers in the Chamber conform to the facts. Parliamentary democracy depends in large part...

@CommonsSpeaker @instituteforgov "... on their doing so.

I am determined as Speaker to uphold fact-based truth-speaking in the House of Commons, and these practices are designed to achieve that end."

@CommonsSpeaker @instituteforgov PS.

Comments of course welcome. I am far from being a HoC expert.

- Something needs to change, within the current (archaic) rules.

- This is an amateur stab at it.

- It needs further work.

- It's as much to stimulate constructive discussion as anything.

Johnson has not been particularly "accessible" to the families of Covid victims.

He has refused to meet them at least 7 times.

And he visited the Wall, only when politically expedient, under cover of darkness.

Where's your self-respect, @danielmgmoylan?
@danielmgmoylan Johnson has not been "accessible" to cladding tenants, denying govt help.

HoL made amendments. UKG repeatedly rejected them.

Many tenants will become bankrupt.

Is this "accessible"?

One imagined shilling might stop when one got your peerage.

Clearly not..

And another.

Why are so many laws now made by ministers, without proper parliamentary scrutiny?

Can you intervene?
@CommonsSpeaker .@CommonsSpeaker

And another.

There is a growing body of evidence of subversion of parliamentary democracy by an increasingly authoritarian right wing government.

What are you going to do about it?

What do you want your legacy as Speaker to be, exactly?

@fascinatorfun .@paulwaugh asks @BorisJohnson about Arcuri & whether he'd adhered to Nolan Principles- after a question about Heathrow.

Johnson waffles about LHR, and offers just one word on Arcuri: "Yes". And looks to camera.

He thinks he's invincible.

Better tho just to ask *one* question.
@fascinatorfun @paulwaugh @BorisJohnson UKGov pressers are stacked against journalist scrutiny. One bite of the cherry. No follow-up. Done by video link.

And that encourages Johnson to get away with this sort of nonsense.

How to combat this?

Sacrifice double or triple questions to *one only*. Decide which...
@fascinatorfun @paulwaugh @BorisJohnson ... is most important.

Heathrow expansion, or Arcuri? If you're going to ask about Arcuri, no contest. Arcuri, obvs.

Ask that, and that alone.

Put the liar on the spot. Make him waffle about that, and that alone. Examine him. Give him nowhere to hide.

Lawyers know this.

#Newsnight digs up a clip of @David_Cameron (then PM) saying that lobbying was "the next big scandal waiting to happen".

@David_Cameron .@campbellclaret on #Newsnight, saying that Johnson and his ministers regularly break all 7 of the #NolanPrinciples - and he finds it "scary" that no one seems, with this government, to care very much about those breaches of public standards, or to view them as scandals.
@David_Cameron @campbellclaret Prof Elizabeth David-Barrett says on #Newsnight that the matters around Cameron/Arcuri are not so much about rule-breaking as "declining [public] standards".

And she gives examples, including those around (lack of) transparency.

@pritipatel is - and has been found to be - a bully.

On her public utterances alone, "kind" is the last word anyone would apply to her.

@TomTugendhat used to be so much better than this feeble submission to all things neo-Tory.

What happened to him?
@pritipatel @TomTugendhat The only reason Patel may have some support across parts of the Tory bedrock vote, despite her incompetence and bullying, is that her unremitting xenophobia appeals to part of that increasingly UKIPified constituency.

@pritipatel @TomTugendhat And, after her frankly subversive Israel meetings, she should never have been appointed to a senior or indeed any govt post.

The only reason she was, was her hardline Brexiter credentials.

Mr Tugendhat does himself no favours in supporting her.

Such a vile tweet, which implies that you cannot be both Muslim and British/English.

This tweet is reported to @Conservatives @10DowningStreet @amandamilling and to @HoCStandards.
@Conservatives @10DowningStreet @amandamilling @HoCStandards @Mike_Fabricant To be scrupulously fair, Fabricant did also tweet as below a little later.

But the tweet at the head of this short thread has not been deleted, or apologised for. Image
