#MichaelJackson - Blood On The Dance Floor reached #1 in the UK chart 24 years ago today.

A retrospective 👇 #Thread with links, interviews, videos and remixes. #Music #MJFam

Producer @TeddyRiley1 was working on the track in June '90, missing a b'day party for a friend. That evening Riley learned someone was shot on the dance floor at the party. At the time, the rhythm he was working on was aggressive & menacing no words, no title, & no melody.
Jackson listened carefully to the tapes Riley brought with him and instantly loved what he heard. The tracks used different chords than he was accustomed to. The rhythms were fresh and edgy. The beats swung with velocity and hit like sledgehammers.
A couple of weeks later, however, Riley says he was shocked to learn Jackson's title for the track: "Blood on the Dance Floor." Riley got goosebumps. "It was like he prophesied that record. He felt its mood."
Ultimately however "Blood on the Dance Floor" didn't make it to Dangerous. "It wasn't quite finished, there were still some vocals to add" Michael loved the song, but he would listen to it and say, 'I like what you did here, but we still need this here.' He was a perfectionist.

Teddy Riley Vs Babyface On IG Live | Teddy Riley Plays Michael Jackson Blood On The Dance Floor

Michael's initial inspiration comes from a rhythm Teddy planned on using in Sunet Driver but ultimately opted for darker phrasing for the song..

♫ "Every night stance is like taking a chance, it's not about love and romance and now you're gonna get it"
The song is about a predatory woman named Susie who seduces Michael before plotting to stab him in the back with a knife. The composition explores a variety of genres ranging from dance & funk to New Jack Swing. Both the song & album are dedicated to @eltonofficial
Michael Dedicated Blood On The Dance Floor to Elton as a thank you for his help at the end of 1993 when Elton welcomed Michael into his home at the cancellation of the Dangerous Tour.
The advanced draft was mixed again during the sessions for HIStory with a final polish during in 1997 at the recording sessions in Montreux where the original album tracks for the album were recorded.
Michael reached out to @VincentPaterson for the video & Paterson suggested that Michael use it to change his image so that he would appear more masculine. The scenario Paterson wrote saw Michael walk into a club packed with dancers.

An alternative, saturated and syncopated video for Blood On The Dance Floor exists, shot on a super-8 camera set to the Fire Island remix giving the short film a 'tainted feel' befitting the the dark ambiance of the song.
$ony rejected this version believing that Michaels short films required a cleaner and more classical aesthetic.
Paterson finalized the video based on Conrad Hill's shots. $ony then commissioned a second version the Refugee Camp Mix.

During filming of the short film, Michael had become a new father and his spirits were higher than ever. On the forthcoming album cover, Michael decided to once again take a creative approach to his new album cover by commissioning a well-respected artist to handle the job.
In "Bringing Blood On The Dance Floor to Life" @Pezjax interviews cover artist Will Wilson about the conspiracy theories & suggestions it was Masonic & Illuminati piece. This interview includes the real hidden message in the cover & it's well worth a read
"Blood on the Dancefloor" became a top ten hit in almost all countries in Europe. It peaked at number one in the UK, Denmark, Spain and New Zealand, charting for 11 weeks in the latter two nations. In the UK it sold 85,000 copies in its first week. @MJChartData
It was Jackson's seventh and final UK chart topper as a solo artist. It had the most longevity in Switzerland, where it spent 18 weeks in the chart.

Smile #HIStoryStreamingParty
"Smile" is based on the soundtrack for Charlie Chaplin's 1936 movie Modern Times. Chaplin composed the music, & John Turner / Geoffrey Parsons added lyrics in 1954. Michael cited "Smile" as his favourite song...
..it was scheduled to be released as the seventh and final single but it was cancelled at the last minute and only a few copies, mostly promos, went into circulation making it one of the rarest and most collectible of all of Michael’s.
It’s lyrics, based on lines and themes from the film, the singer is telling the listener to cheer up and that there is always a bright tomorrow, just as long as they smile. Given how introspective and autobiographical this album is, “Smile” bookends the album perfectly..

HIStory #HIStoryStreamingParty
Containing historical compositions & historical audio quotes, dispersed throughout the track included quotes from Michael in 1970, samples "Beethoven Lives Upstairs" & "The Great Gate of Kiev" (on the original pressing)
With lyrics containing "He got kicked in the back" & "Keep daring to motivate" Michael Jackson reflects on his recent events then creates an anthem "Every day create your history" "Every path you take you're leaving your legacy"

A bold statement.
Audio quotes sampled: "Charles Lindbergh Report", "Robert Kennedy Eulogy", "Farewell to Baseball", "I Have a Dream". The song suggests we should all live our life right, consider what we're making of ourselves, it’s similar in lyrical style...

My favorite Michael Jackson track now, 2 BAD #HIStoryStreamingParty

2 Bad (Released as part of Ghosts from his follow up Remix Album “Blood On The Dancefloor: History In The Mix”)...
“2 Bad” deals with themes of alienation and judgement. Self declaring at the intro as the King Of Pop, the song confronts his accusers, his gritty voice raises its volume and declares “You’re disgustin’ me !"...
This is in direct response to people who have harmed him, people who have extorted money from him, even people who simply judge him..

Tabloid Junkie #HIStoryStreamingParty
Another of my most favourite Michael Jackson tracks. New Jack Swing meets Funk Pop with lyrics that pertain to media bias and negative coverage of about his personal life...
Similar in lyrical style to the amazing “Leave Me Alone” from the 80’s and jaw dropping “Why You Wanna Trip On Me” from the early 90s "Tabloid Junkie" opens simply with “In the News today from the strange and weird fact-file, Singer Michael Jackson Sleeps in an oxygen chamber…”
Ultimately, he’s stating that we shouldn’t believe everything we read, the media is just making money from fake news stories. This was before the Internet had evolved into the cesspit it is today, 11 years before twitter even started lol!
