Meat consumption really seems like one of those things where we should tax its negative externalities and call it a day rather than trying to convince people it has a moral valence
You want your steak? Fine, here is a 30% excise tax on your steak. No one feels bad, no one gets hurt.
(well, except the cow. the cow gets hurt)

How do I become one of those Bostonians who just goes down the cape for three months
Need a big house on the shore then a writing cottage in the yard that looks like a 50:1 scale model of the big house

Less dramatic quirks of the new census:

1. Pennsylvania surpasses Illinois in population
2. DC surpasses Vermont
Pennsylvania has actually been more populous than Illinois for most of American history. Illinois only passed it in 2000.
One of those quirks of US population history that can't possibly seem correct is that Pennsylvania was the 2nd most populous state in the country for 120 years

I have no opinion on the Super League but the strong anti- takes are kind of reminiscent of the people in the '90s who thought baseball would be ruined forever if the Dodgers and Yankees played each other in July occasionally
"It will destroy the Premier League!" oh you mean this Premier League? Yeah no systemic issues here. Image
I love soccer twitter because it's the perfect balance of you all being super mad at my takes on this ridiculous, absurd sport, and me honestly being completely uninvested in what you think of them, or in the sport at all

I find the "What if we cared about gun violence the way we care about vaccine safety?" comparison so annoying. What is implied by this? Who is the "we" in this comparison?
A lot of people care about gun violence and vaccine safety. They're different issues with different historical antecedents? And caring about one doesn't imply uncaringness about the other?
You could just as easily say "what if we cared about traffic deaths the way we care about mass shootings?"

Ah yes, single family zoning, historically that great engine of upward mobility for communities of color housinghumanright.org/homeownership-… Image
Clearly this is why, traditionally, wealthy suburbs are so keen on getting rid of single family zoning. They want those luxury gentrifier apartments, whereas by keeping single family zoning they run the risk of having homeowners of color move near them.
Only in the Pynchonesque world of LA housing politics would an org called Housing Is a Human Right have as its central goal "do not build housing" Image

The collection of habits that are characteristically German is so random that it seems like it's a whole country trying to troll people
"We have the best transit but also highways with no speed limit and we burn little wood pellets for heat but also drink seltzer water"
"No one owns a house and we all carry €6,000 in cash at all times"
