At his Cub Scouts meeting tonight, my son learned the basic rules of whittling.

E.g.:
➡️Don't give it to someone else unless they acknowledge receiving it.
➡️Don't swing it in the air.
➡️Don't ever carry it to school.
➡️It is a privilege to have a whittling knife.

and then....
The kids were instructed on the idea of the "blood circle".🩸

(If anyone steps within this circle, PUT YOUR KNIFE DOWN.)

(Blood circle!! The kids were thrilled.)
Then they got to practice, with adult supervision.
After demonstrating basic competence with rules of whittling-knife-safety, they received a "whittling chip."

This card is sacred and - the scout leader explained - can be taken away if they misuse the knife.

If they don't have the card, they' don't get to use the knife.
But hey, folks:

If we can do this kind of training for cub scout pocket-knives🔪....

Why, exactly, can't we universally agree on the same rules-of-engagement for firearms? 🤷🏽‍♀️🔫🤷🏽‍♀️

Without data, we are just spitting in the wind.

Which is why this thread is so important. Once again, @AndrewMorral @RANDCorporation @Arnold_Ventures fill a long-standing void on #gunviolence. THANK YOU. 🙏
With accurate numbers, we can figure out who to help and where.
With accurate data, we can measure whether our #gunviolence prevention work actually makes a difference on a population level.

These shootings are such uniquely American tragedies.

Especially when we have so clearly failed as a society to heed the warning signs.

There is no way to move forward without acknowledging that some people - like this man - are not safe to own guns. nytimes.com/2021/04/17/us/…
The question, of course, is:
* who is not safe?
* how does one identify who is safe?
* for how long are they unsafe?

We have some clues, already.
As @EmmyBetz and I have written with @BulletPtsProj there are a few clear warning signs, such as:
- current suicidal thoughts
- history of perpetrating #DomesticViolence

I have lots of thoughts on the pausing of the J&J vaccine.

The biggest is that I’m glad that we do good science and post-vaccine monitoring. The 2nd is that even if real, this association is very small. More below: apnews.com/article/politi…
1. Reporting 6 cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis plus low platelets- the same complication observed w/ AstraZeneca - among 7 million doses administered.

**If real, it would never have been picked up by clinical trials. The rate is TINY. No trial involves millions of ppl.
2. What makes it plausible?
👉 the same complication has been reported as a very rare SE of AZ
👉 these 2 vaccines have the same “vector” (adenovirus)

Watching @POTUS Rose Garden statements on firearm injury. #gunviolence is indeed a #publichealth crisis - and I am so thankful to have a president who recognizes it for what it is. 🔥
"Seconds change your life forever."

100s of 1000s of families across the United States know this story all too well.

And the trauma does not ever go away. It just transmogrifies.

"It takes real courage to turn pain into purpose."

Thank you @davidzweig and @LanceBurkhart4 for the thoughtful comments.

You’re right: Estimating 15-20% of population infected,& some overlap bt infections & vaccines, likely 60-70% of US population without any immunity. I was inaccurate. (Of course, nowhere near herd immunity)
Importantly for the current situation, and also not in my original tweet - those eligible to be vaccinated, are not the people currently getting infected.
We are seeing fewer cases in the elderly (who have access to vaccines) & more in the young (who have not had access, & who are out and about without masks).

Thank you @olgakhazan for writing this!!

Please, wait your turn. If I can have my husband wait, you can too.

Those who jump the line are worsening inequities and throwing the system into disarray.

New, clearer guidelines on "high risk conditions" from @CDCgov here (scroll down for the list, read through for all the evidence):

cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…
And remember: Blacks and Latino/Hispanic folks are getting vaccinated at lower rates than Whites - despite being higher risk for infection.

Taking advantage of our privilege to skip the line, only worsens these disparities.
