When I saw the same people declaring they supported the CPM and now support Trinamul in Bengal, the same who are decrying me as shamelessly Right Wing, I realize something is broken and immoral among them, not me whose family business was killed by the CPM and who fled his home.
So you can collect plaudits from your Comp Literature, History, and Anthro departments in AC offices of capitalist societies, but don't tell me to keep quiet when you're so oblivious and ideological to forget or justify state collapse, economic decline, and political violence...
What would your esteemed colleagues think of you when they hear about the massacres and the repression under the venerable Left Front in West Bengal? Would you and them use Marx, Foucault or Fannon to justify it, to look enlightened, and even selfless?...
I have washed dishes, done construction, been an all night hotel receptionist, and eaten one meal a day to afford my life in the US. I was a full scholarship student.
I enjoyed privilege in India, but I never forgot that and gave back in pro bono work to various folks there....
So, kindly, kindly shove your self-righteous BS where someone from your "native land" doesn't see it and point out the contradictions.

Some of you graciously sought my opinion on the West Bengal elections. I don't have the bandwidth and energy to answer individual queries. So, here are a few stray thoughts, with the caveat that all of these can be disproved as more data becomes available....
It's a debacle for the BJP. They can justify it as becoming the main opposition party or increasing seat and vote share many times over. But if such tremendous amounts of party resources and time from national leaders is needed for this, then costs may outweigh benefits....
Whose vote and seat share did BJP eat into? The dying Congress and CPM strongholds, not that of TMC's. In fact, TMC increased its votes and seats.

So, will being number 2 allow BJP to use religious polarization the next time? Not if TMC moves to the right just like this time....

A thread on how pacted transitions occur. If you're an expert, please, feel free to add or correct me.

1. A pacted transition means special guarantees for the outgoing leader and associates to incentivize them to give up power and not retake power....
2. Both sides during a transition have hard and soft liners.

Hard liner outgoing elites want to keep power or extract major concessions. Soft liners want minimal guarantees like legal immunity or to keep their wealth....
Similarly, hard liner incoming elites don't want to give any concessions to the outgoing elites, while their soft liner friends want to give such concessions.

Negotiations occur both within each group (hardliners v. softliners) and between the incoming and outgoing elites....

A few pointers about the possibility of violence by Trump allied militias. [Thread]

1. What the US may face are small loosely-connected insurgencies, despite the use of "nullification" terminology reminiscent of the civil war by the militia leaders. 1/5
2. Insurgent groups' territorial control may depend on whether local terrain helps/hinders security forces, local law enforcement is weak and complicit, local and state political leaders are sympathetic, local populace can provide food and shelter as well as recruits, etc.. 2/5
3. It would be irrational for national and state-level GOP leaders to abandon these militias because they can be leveraged in negotiations with Dems on issues from Health Care to Public Lands. Similarly, Trump may leverage them to acquire a permanent space in the GOP. 3/5

Apropos the role of alliances in developing Sino-Indian crisis, some thoughts:

Since the crisis began, India has moved closer to the US anchored Quad (with Japan and Australia).

Given the complex negotiations, the crisis may have spurred India on, but the process was ongoing...
Yet, again, India has stressed "issue based", "flexible alliances" in a post-hegemonic world.

It is loth to ask for US assistance against China in this crisis, though it seems India has kept the US abreast of developments....
India with good reason wants to balance being dragged into a conflict with China at the US' behest with the reality that it cannot deter or compel China on its own.

Thus, unless, India accepts a subsidiary role to China, the present crisis raises tough questions on alliances...

What happens if Pres. Biden attempts to send the FBI and US troops to quell armed rebellions launched by white militia groups in various states, if Pres. Trump loses the 2020 elections? Some insights from Britain in the Rhodesian (white minority ruled Zimbabwe) case:...
First, GOP Congressmen and Senators may argue that Federal Agents and Soldiers won't "shoot down their kith and kin." There may even be mutiny in the Armed Forces.

Thus, either any enforcement be extremely light or opportunities for amnesty be given to surrendering rebels...
Second, GOP state governors and legislators may side with White militias, implicitly or openly contingent on how much repressive force they expect from DC. At an extreme, they may even rely on civilian leaders associated with the armed groups for political campaigning....
