Former president Álvaro Uribe recently tweeted about "dissipated molecular revolution" (DMR) as the cause of the latest cycle of protests in Colombia. The odd phrasing raised a lot of questions. It's an striking case of the "mainstreaming" of the far right in Lat Am /1
Crafted originally by French philosopher F. Guattari, the idea of DMR was appropriated by Alexis López, longtime member of neo-nazi groups in Chile and now a semi-famous "theorist" (and obviously antagonist) of this alleged model of revolution./2
His is a regurgitation of Cold War theories of "revolutionary war," with a "postmodern" twist. Some of his "enemies": Gramsci, Frankfurt School, Guattari (who visited Chile in '91), EZLN, H. Chávez, "gender ideology," J. Butler, the Mapuche, Shining Path, ETA, Podemos, etc./3
Local reports have confirmed López's links to neo-nazi organizations since his youth, and in a radio interview today, he avoided Q's about past/present allegiances. When asked, he, of course, defended Pinochet, and said yes to being a national-socialist (though not a nazi). /4
Reports have confirmed López was in Colombia as recently as February to give a talk at a military university. The fact that Uribe's tweet has a veiled reference to the "stages" of DMR shows familiarity with the theory in circles of the Colombian Right, and likely the military./5
It's unclear what the theory says about how to "combat" DMR. In conferences, López refers to the action of "patriotic citizens" to defend the fatherland from enemies. Govt repressive force is running amok, and paramilitarism is alive & well in COL, and extremely dangerous./end
addendum: in 2000, Colombian press reported on an international neonazi summit taking place in Chile, organized, among others, by Alexis López. There were Colombian groups present. Activists and government openly repudiated the event.…
