My favorite Twitter trend right now is those scolding people for being too cautious as though those of us who spent the past year and change wearing a mask and stopping the spread should trust those who mocked us for wearing masks and tried to overthrow the government.
There's this thing called collective trauma. A lot of us are experiencing it, and the way out is incremental. It's nice to think we'll all just throw off our masks on day 14 post vaxx and embrace our fellow human but our fellow human might be unvaccinated.
Last March my inbox was filled with announcements of colleagues testing positive with covid and I spent two weeks wondering if my body was harboring an infection that would kill me. So like yeah, gonna take me a minute to accept things are "good" and they aren't yet.
Also come flu season if we ever get past covid I'm wearing a mask on mass transit! You don't like it? You can literally go fuck yourself.

I've been thinking about this a lot since Wudan tweeted it. And I remember hearing it a long time ago. And the thing is, I say this sincerely... I don't think I have good taste. That's not why I got into this work.
I think that's why when people ask me about my process it's so hard because I don't really have one. I feel like when I'm working in text even though I'm the one creating the words or whatever I'm just like chiseling stone trying to get tell the story that needs to be told
Which I guess is my way of saying it's ok to have bad taste. It's ok to just want to tell stories that don't meet any kind of aesthetic. It's ok to figure out your aesthetic. It's ok to just play and be weird. But if your a journalist you should be thinking long and hard

Semi-regular reminder that many of the journalists weighing in on Biden's tax policy are unbelievably rich and stand to be materially impacted by a tax on the rich. Reporters who are not affluent will have a much smaller podium.
As for the journalists who aren't rich... many of them especially if they are working for prestige outlets fall into this great framework screen capped from @gaywonk 's Youtube. Those who occupy managerial positions in the media or gain sJournalists entering the system are unlikely to make their w
Somehow being much much richer than the vast majority of the US public is not seen as biased in the way that ::checks notes:: being Black (or Hispanic, or Native, or Queer, or Asian) is.

I've been thinking about the way I fundamentally (admittedly with privilege) reoriented my life to protect myself from Covid and to protect my mental health and wellbeing and like underpinning all of this was a deep feeling like the country was fine letting me die.
I'm slowly moving back to NYC and a lot of people are surprised that I'm coming back, and it's seriously confusing to me because the only reason I left was because I knew a fall resurgence was coming and being locked inside all winter would be very very very bad for me mentally.
But you don't move to a small town you've never heard of cause there aren't many people there so it's good for socially isolating and near places where snowshoeing and hiking are a thing if you have faith that the govt is valuing people over the economy.
