You guys. My Dept chair is giving our History Dept end of the year highlights in the form of Daily Wire headlines, inspired by their article on J&JW (a creative take on my History Dept colloquium earlier this year). I’m dying. Read on and see why I love my @CalvinHistory home.
"Basham has made a fundamental category mistake: She has confused traditionally moderate evangelical social justice concerns with the platform of the Democratic left. Contrary to her claims, most of the allegedly left-leaning evangelical leaders...
she has selected for excoriation did not acquire their social ethics from the Dem Party; they..inherited it from mainstream Am evangelical theology. The people whom Basham, a politically conservative Southern Baptist, accuses of being closet leftists are not theological liberals.
"For the most part, they’re not even progressive evangelicals like Shane Claiborne or the editors of Sojourners magazine. Instead, most of them are biblical inerrantists, &many of them are gender complementarians. Few have publicly endorsed Dems, and none of them are pro-choice.
"Trump has done what no Democrat...could have done. He has...made the Republican Party de facto pro-choice. Having stripped the pro-life plank from the GOP platform, having said that Governor Ron DeSantis’s ban on abortion after six weeks is “too harsh” & a “terrible mistake,” 🧵
...and having promised to veto a national abortion ban, Trump has now gone one step further, essentially advocating for greater access to abortion.
But that’s not all.
The public is more pro-choice today than it was at the start of Trump’s presidential term,
...with pro-choice support near record levels.
Approval for abortion is strongest among younger people, who will be voting for many decades to come. (Seventy-six percent of 18-to-29-year-olds say abortion should be legal in all or most cases.)
For decades, conservative evangelical power brokers defined "truth" in terms of what advanced their idea of Truth--which neatly aligned w/ their own agenda.
They founded institutions, organizations, publishers, & media platforms to advance, defend, and perpetuate this Truth. 🧵
They platformed writers who amplified pre-determined narratives. They shunned, de-platformed, and cast out those who questioned these Truths. They educated kids to debate, feeding them pre-established talking points. They replaced disciplinary expertise w/ in-house apologetics.
They denounced "postmodernism," "situational ethics," & relativism of all types while advancing "presuppositionalism" & its derivatives & contrasting the "Christian worldview" w/ "secular" error. Since all Truth was God's Truth, only Chrs* had access to that Truth. To all Truth.
And also this: "The student and her family are well-loved in the congregation, acc to Hickory Grove Executive Pastor Steve Adams, who said the church was trying to care for them in a horrible situation."
Kudos to @bobsmietana for covering this.
I wish it weren't newsworthy.

I've been tracking the backlash against survivors and advocates for yrs now, & this is the essence of what they've been asking for. Consistently this.
Wouldn't it make sense for people whose theology taught them to abhor evil, who've fueled an entire sexual purity industry..

@geekyguyjay @blakecallens @bonhoefferchild So “muscular exercise of temporal authority by men, & the forceful application of male dominion in civic affairs” isn’t run-of-the mill comp. I’m all for working w/ comps on this (I do every day), but these guys alone pose the risk they do not b/c people support them…
@geekyguyjay @blakecallens @bonhoefferchild But because conservative evs will elect a guys who hands them power. I highlight gender not because I’m “egalitarian,” a category that makes sense only in ev circles, but because I’m a historian of gender who has studied authoritarianism.
@geekyguyjay @blakecallens @bonhoefferchild Right now there are many strategies being pursued. One is trying to convince evs not to vote Trump. That’s widely assumed to be futile, by political analysts. Another is mobilizing more passive moderates & disaffected progressives to show up like never before.
Is the whole “Christian nationalism” discourse just a smear campaign against Chrs? A lot of CN sympathizers are pushing this claim, & it’s in their interest to do so. But read @TaylorMatthewD’s thread.
Are there some who will use “CN” to try to marginalize the views of conservative Christians? In this political landscape, of course. But without exception, every single reporter I’ve talked with on this issue has taken great pains to distinguish a devout Christian faith from CN.
Many days I spend at least an hour helping a reporter wrap their head around the nuances. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve sent reporters to @TaylorMatthewD for more of the same. Sometimes the result is still clumsy reporting, but usually it’s not.
