After two intense weeks of chess lessons in the slums of Makoko, we held a tournament to test their understanding of the game and celebrate their excellence.

The miracle child with Cerebral palsy Fredinard Won with a phenomenal performance.

A star is born.
It didn’t take long to realize that Fredinard was perhaps a savant when I gave him a complex Knight move geometry to solve few minutes after teaching him the basic movement of the Knight piece.

This in itself is an extraordinary feat, even for a genius.
He was born to play chess
I visited his home and met his family to tell them what a wonder their son was.
His father is a poor fisherman and his mother a petty trader.
They barely make enough money to feed daily, hence the reason why Fredinard and his three siblings do not go to school.
For a child with such incredible gift, it broke my heart to learn that he and his siblings have never had any form of formal education.
The @chessinslums has decided to put Fredinard on scholarship support, and will continue to sponsor his education for as long as possible.
For the little boy with dreamy eyes, this is just the beginning of his beautiful story.
In those two weeks where we taught him chess, I never heard him speak an English word but on the final day of the tournament when he held up his trophy, he muttered the word “champion”.
The Makoko Chess dream was a resounding success by every metric.
We introduced the magic of chess to 30 children from being complete beginners who had never seen a chess board before to competing and showcasing the gift of chess that they had just discovered.
We had a revolutionary idea to Make suits for the boys and dresses for the girls(Inspired by The queen’s gambit) to tell a new narrative of children in the slums that is not just one of poverty, but an image of what is possible if they’re given equal opportunities to excel.
We couldn’t have just taught them about the prestigious game of chess without letting them feel prestigious.
There is potential for greatness in every child, what they need is an someone who sees the best in them regardless of their background.
A slum is just a place, it doesn’t define the people who live there. This is why we must be relentless in our fight to create an equitable future for these children who have been marginalized for so long.

To let them know that their dreams are valid too.
In the two weeks spent in Makoko, we profiled about a 100 children who do not go to school and we’re kickstarting a global campaign to get them back to school and establish a Chess center in their community.

It is possible to do great things from a small place
#Makokochessdream
Thank you everyone 😊

Where there is compassion, there will be miracles.

Here’s a story of how we took 55 homeless children off the streets of Lekki/epe expressway, and helped them find their place in the world again.

A thread… Image
They say a child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel it’s warmth.
Thousands of homeless street children who wander the streets of Lagos, often seen but rarely heard, will someday lose that childhood innocence, become Area boys and a menace to society.

So we made up our minds to share our lives with them everyday for the entire month of December. The plan was to show them Love, kindness, empower, and help them find their place in the world again.
We walked the length of Lekki all the way to Jakande to talk to every child we could find on the streets.Image

Allow me weigh in a bit on the Tech and "Yahoo" boys conversation lest we risk becoming a generation of reactionary young people with zero will to do the hard things required to solve hard problems.

A thread...
Having conversations like this on Twitter can be daunting especially when it's one with a lot of grey areas.

I'll start off with saying that as a 17year old teenager from Ikorodu, the only thing that prevented me from getting into "Yahoo" was because I couldn't afford a Laptop.
Not morals, not religion, not convictions. If someone had introduced me to HK then, maybe I would have been on a much different path- One that leads to "Tunde wire"

This desperation became deeply rooted In my heart due to the many nights I watched my mother go to bed hungry...

It's been nearly a month since I underwent a total hip replacement surgery to correct a childhood injury. Although the surgery was successful, my healing hasn't been linear.
After weeks of coping with persistent pain, I now feel ready to share my experience...
At exactly 3:30pm on the 11th of July, the wheel chair was brought to my ward and I was asked to change into a blue hospital gown for surgery.
I had spent the last hour reading the kind wishes from everyone on social media and was completely blown away by the love and support.
The words and prayers were deeply comforting, but it was time to face my moment of truth; alone.
As I sat in the wheel chair, I felt a different mix of emotions- it dawned on me that this was my reality now.
I kissed my teary eyed mother and reassured her that I was gonna be fine.

Dear governor @seyiamakinde , congrats on your re-election as leader of the people of Oyo state.
40 homeless children living under Mokola bridge made this painting and would like to present it to you in person

Let’s work together to help them find their place in the world again
We're now in the 2nd phase of our plan for the boys which is rehabilitation and re-integration into society. Our approach is holistic and Data driven so we need all state and non-state actors to work together so the boys don't end up on the streets again when all of this is over.

The greatest miracle of chess is in the inate ability of a pawn to become a queen(The most powerful piece)

- Chess champions from Obanliku Becheve

A thread...
Two months ago, I put out this story on a practice we discovered in Obanliku LGA Becheve where little girls were being sold into marriage for money and gift items.

We later got to learn that the same Man that had been advocating to end the practice was also molesting the girls in his care.
This almost made us give up on the project but we decided to brave the odds and made the trip back to Crossriver.

Yesterday, I finally found the courage to confront a pain I've lived with all my life. This could fundamentally change everything but it's an important first step towards recovery.

It all started 27 years ago...
One of the things we don't talk about is the fear of confronting what may be a worsening health condition. We ignore the pain and tension building up in our bodies because we're afraid of what we might find. Instead, we opt for blissful ignorance and hope for the best.
I have done this more times than i care to admit...
For 27 years, i have lived with excruciating pain in my right leg.
I wasn't born this way but something happened that changed the trajectory of my life.
