#YEMEN:#UAE builds secret air base on strategic #Mayon Island in #Yemen: AP

The UAE is continuing to building a secret air base on the strategic #Mayon_Island in #Yemen, according to the US Associated Press (AP)’s report.
The agency quoted officials in the #Saudi-backed exiled Hadi government affirmed the #UAE is standing behind the construction of the air base on the volcanic Mayon Island in the Bab al-Mandab strait, although it announced in 2019 the withdrawal of its forces from the
military coalition led by #Saudi.

Jeremy Binnie, Middle East editor at the “Janes” intelligence company, which has been following construction work on Mayon Island for years, said that building the base means that there is a “long-term strategic goal to establish a permanent
presence, adding that the matter is not only related to the #Yemen war but also regarding the movement of ships in #Bab_alMandab.

The air base on the island of #Mayon allows those who control it to project power in the strait and easily launch air strikes in #Yemen.
It also will provide the base for any operations in the Red Sea, the Gulf of #Aden, and East Africa.
Last April, Satellite images from Planet Labs seen by the AP showed trucks and construction equipment a 1.85-kilometer-long runway on the island.

According to the agency,
the #Emirati decision to build an air base on the island comes after the #UAE dismantled parts of a military base it was running in #Eritrea, and used it as a point to start its operations in #Yemen.

#Mayun, also known as Perim Island, sits some 3.5 kilometers (2 miles) off the southwestern edge of Yemen. World powers have recognized the island’s strategic location for hundreds of years, especially with the opening of the Suez Canal linking the

The #British kept the island up until their departure from Yemen in 1967. The Soviet Union, allied with South #Yemen’s Marxist government, upgraded #Mayun’s naval facilities but used them “only infrequently,” according a 1981 #CIA analysis.
That’s likely due to needing to bring water and supplies onto the island. That will affect the new air base as well as #Mayun has no modern port, said Binnie, the Janes analyst.
The base still may interest #American forces, however. U.S. troops operated

“This does seem to be a longer-term strategic aim to establish a relatively permanent presence,” said Jeremy Binnie, the Mideast editor at the open-source intelligence company Janes who has followed construction on #Mayun for years.

While the Horn of Africa “has become a dangerous place” for the Emiratis due to competitors and local war risks, #Mayun has a small population and offers a valuable site for monitoring the Red Sea, said Eleonora Ardemagni,

Sharaf affirmed the steadfast position of the political leadership in Sanaa, which stems from the principle of achieving complete and sustainable peace for the #Yemeni people, represented by a comprehensive ceasefire and lifting the siege.

He pointed to the importance of these steps, as they are considered humanitarian and necessary, which will subsequently prepare for the holding of negotiations that include all parties to reach a sustainable political settlement.
The Foreign Minister indicated that ending the
military aggression and the exit of foreign forces from Yemeni lands and lifting the siege imposed on the country would contribute to achieving the appropriate atmosphere for any negotiations between the various parties, including the aggressor countries.

for any steps to make any progress in the negotiations,

Observers considered this to be a wave of proof of any of the steps that represent a prelude and a show of good faith, such as lifting the ban on ports and airports and allowing imports and fuel to enter through the
port of Hodeidah, with Sanaa's approval of the American proposal, which was previously rejected by Sanaa, which considers that lifting the ban About ports and the entry of imports into the country is a legal right and cannot be negotiated.
