A new project here at HRM Fire News.

"Problems impacting response times": a running list.

Getting the best and fastest response to residents on every call should be a prime goal of the fire department.
Unfortunately, through a variety of problems relating to how units are assigned, CAD, coverage, and the structure of dispatch, HRFE isn't achieving this goal.

This is a major problem impacting responses on a daily basis. It's often correctable but not getting enough attention.
So, I'm going to start a list in an effort to keep everyone informed. The list is just a start for now but I'll add to it over time, so they're all in one place, in the event anybody in a position of power ever decides to look into this stuff.
Issue #1:

10 minute response delay on a medical call due to no area coverage.

I've been sent this a few times. It is interesting. I don't have super strong thoughts on it. There will be lots of things that should be re-evaluated post incident.
If retired DNR members want to make themselves available as a sort of surge capacity for future incidents and have up to date skills etc that could be used, I don't see why that should't be set up through official channels for the next incident.
I'm not surprised it wasn't approved this time as I think the scale of this incident took some people by surprise so I think there will be lots of things you can look at and say what if this was done differently or that was done differently etc.

Notes from the 5pm press conference:
- Today a good day. As reported earlier commander declared fire under control

- HRFE compliment still on scene is 3 Engines, 3 Tankers, Utility Apparatus, 30 personnel. Still extinguishing hot spots.
- Despite all the rain, crews are still extinguishing hot spots. Still a lot of work ahead
- Lot of work to do to moves and pack up equipment etc

- Softwood forests create an almost umbrella effect so it takes a long time for the water to fully sink in
- Chief Meldrum asked to sum it up: the week was a roller coaster. Blessed no serious injuries. Terrifying situation Sunday, lots of apprehension. High fire behaviour through the week, resources strained to a level not seen in recent memory. It’s quite a week

2:50pm 6 Engine (Spryfield) responding to a medical
If I heard correctly I think 6E said they’re responding from STN60. If that’s correct 5Q would be substantially closer on this (3 and 7 also). Mountain Rd
Yeah sounds like 6E is taking this in from STN60.....

They’re going to the Salvation Army on Gottingen for a report of a smell of smoke near the boiler room. 3E has ordered the balance of the alarm be paged. Update to follow.
They’ve added 2E only to the call. That is *not* the balance of the alarm. 3A, 4E, 12Tac, D2, and PCC would be the balance of the alarm but they have not been paged.
3E on scene to nothing showing, checking.

HRFE is hiring for the role of District Chief: sjobs.brassring.com/TGnewUI/Search…
They have two openings at this time and are going to consider both internal and external applicants.
The two current vacancies are A Platoon, District 2, and C Platoon, District 3. However, I don't think it's guaranteed that these two hires will necessarily go into those open slots. We'll see what happens.
