If you can, please consider a #PrideMonth 🌈donation to Sylvia's Place, which offers free food and shelter to LGBTQ+ young people who are in need.

People may not know this, but Sylvia Rivera was an active member of @MCCNewYork church.
When she was very close to passing, she called for Rev. Pat + made her promise to open a shelter for LGBTQ+ kids who would otherwise be on the streets, like Sylvia had been.
Sylvia died in 2002, and since then there has been a shelter and food pantry named in her honor at MCCNY.

I should be writing a thing, but instead .... how about a thread for #pride 🌈
I identify as queer / femme / lesbian or... a dyke (but you can only call me that if you're one, too).
I was raised by married, heterosexual parents (in South Texas) who fully believed I would follow their hetero-example into adulthood. And, why wouldn't I? Who could imagine anything else. Not me, not then.

"Black creators have made and popularized some of the internet’s biggest trends, Lorenz reported, but they receive fewer deals from big brands and they’re consistently paid less than their white social media peers."

This is the same phenomenon I wrote about wrt 'mommy bloggers' at BlogHer + Blogalicious back in the 2010s. chapter in this volume: peterlang.com/view/title/217…
The disparities in sponsorship at these two conferences was STARK.

Since that actor/director is trending, I'll just remind you that he's built his reputation on racist/sexist narratives like "Gran Torino" indiewire.com/2021/02/gran-t…
That was not a one-off for him either. One of his early hits was, "The Outlaw Josey Wales," which tells an [racist] story of a supposedly heroic Southern vigilante whose violence is justified by his suffering under the barbarism of invading Northerners. jacobinmag.com/2015/08/civil-…
That (1976) film was based on the (1972) novel: The Rebel Outlaw: Josey Wales (also titled Gone to Texas in later editions) written by Asa Earl Carter, aka, Forrest Carter.

"what extremist researchers see — and what ghost skins hoped for: a 'blurring of the lines,' [between] seemingly ordinary conservatives [and] the hateful ideologies of white supremacy or neo-Nazism"
"we do not know how many white supremacists have infiltrated law enforcement."

I think this is the wrong framing....of "infiltrating"

As one [UNC] board member [said],

“This is a very political thing. [hiring of Nikole Hannah-Jones]…There have been people writing letters and making calls, for and against. But I will leave it to you which is carrying more weight.”

teenvogue.com/story/campus-c… via @TeenVogue
"The corporate capitalist regime that controls American university boards today has manufactured the current crisis of higher education by inflating tuition to compensate for state funding cuts while passing on the debt to students"
[and by] "hiring contingent rather than tenure-line staff to pay teachers less while withholding the security of academic freedom; and [by] appointing administrators who are ultimately accountable to the regime."

Re that last thread - I kept inserting "white" to emphasize that this is something we do, those of us raised white + femme. It changes the frame slightly -- and in important ways, IMO -- from the distancing of "extremism."
I don't mean to diminish the very real danger of "extremism" - to democracy, to lives + health. Full stop. We are endangered by extremists + extremism.
Extremism is a word I have found useful in my own work. AND. I'm increasingly....distrustful and uncomfortable with it as a conceptual tool for understanding the present moment.
