There are lots of other kinds of healthy social relationships beyond "friends/family" and "people at work." Many of those other kinds of relationships happen at work. They must, if you wanna change the work—or even just do it well. Drinking with subordinates is not doing it well.
Sorry. Your experience may differ. I’ve certainly had fun at them. But organizing these chummy white-collar get-togethers—and you can never be chummy with everyone—around drinking is not helpful or safe.
We just had two whole news cycles in a week about the ongoing abuse and sexual harassment of women subordinates at social events by professors and our institutional complicity in it.
Have a book club. Take the class to a play or a basketball game.
