My theory is that sometimes people don’t understand the relative importance of the numbers - to be clear this has little to do with education or intelligence etc.
For example, NHS capacity for Covid patients is a small number on an absolute basis and tiny on a proportionate basis.
For example, prevalence is very important but at non trivial levels (eg 5,000 cases per day) the rate of growth is much much much more important.
For example, the UK vaccination program is a huge success but even a relatively small proportion of the effectively unvaccinated can cause significant problems.
None of this is meant to be doom and gloom. The situation has improved enormously. But we aren’t out of the woods quite yet.

Turing test results debatable brain:

‘It’s ridiculous our sausages don’t have freedom of movement’
Medium pace brain:

‘We’ll bring Lord Frost to the G7 just in case there are some awkward questions’
A dim light shines brain:

‘Maybe our fight with the EU about the international agreement we just signed will not be helpful to the G7 meetings’

Felix Update

A tough few days for the Feels who developed some mobility issues last week and had back surgery yesterday.

Everything went well and he’s fine but that sweet dog will be taking it very easy for the next month or so.
It’s a shame because he had a long list of things to do including sorting out Brexit, leading the G7 meetings, and becoming Prime Minister but his health comes first.
He’s asked me to confirm to everyone that he is a poet statesman master story teller dog who can do no wrong.

He is happy to entertain offers for long read pieces, titled, ‘I, Felix’ or ‘It’s not just about cat chasing’ or ‘I always know what I’m doing.’

1. I don’t disagree with this gloomy prognosis but it’s worth having a think about why we are where we are, and then, how we might progress to a better situation.
2. Firstly, we can quickly despatch the idea that HMG did not realise the consequences of the NI Protocol.

Everyone else did, including numerous commentators, and, most tellingly, the DUP (for obvious reasons).
3. The whole point of the NI protocol was to treat NI as a separate place (in some respects) between the EU and the UK. It is simply ridiculous (and unbelievable) to now be surprised that NI is indeed being treated as different from rUK.

I tried earlier but I really can’t fathom the idea of picking a fight with the EU re the protocol at the same time as the G7.
It’s a little subtle because I don’t think the EU / US will want to disrupt the meetings but is there an opportunity for ‘something to happen’…oh yes…
