0. Did we do the work we said we’d do?

Clients should understand that the tasks you tackle contribute towards their goals.
1. Are more keywords being indexed to the site / pages in Google Search Console?

Updating and optimizing existing content is a great opportunity to bring in early results.

Another indicator of SEO success is that new pages rank (even poorly) for new keywords.
2. Are those keywords moving towards page 1 over time?

Lowering average position over time is a good way to measure overall SEO progress.
3. Are we beginning to see traffic in Google Analytics attributable to non-branded search traffic?

An uptick in non-branded searches shows you’re optimizing for more than just the client’s name.
4. Is the volume of keywords on page 1 and organic traffic increasing every week?

Month over month?

Quarter over quarter?
5. Is this traffic leading to conversions?

Many SEOs fall prey to building high volumes of traffic that don’t convert.

Increasing total traffic is not useful unless it can convert (to sales, signups, etc).
6. Are conversions increasing WoW? MoM? QoQ?

Celebrate your small wins, especially early on.

Any conversions coming from new keywords and pages is progress to show off.
If you change the KPI from [traffic, conversions, revenue] to ‘progress’, you can start tracking immediately.

Significant SEO results come with time, but you can still show you’re making an impact early on!
