Here’s a quick take on social media for military leaders, particularly senior leaders.

There is a lot of discussion about whether senior leaders should be active on Twitter.

Some say no because junior Soldiers aren’t on here as much as other social media apps. 1/5
I was talking with @Meghann_MT about a month ago about this and thought of this entire situation a different way. 2/5
She said “soldiers may not be reading your tweets but journalists do. And soldiers read what we write.” 3/5
I had never thought of it that way before. Then I looked at who follows me, who I follow, who I have known a while. People like @soledadobrien @Meghann_MT @tomricks1 @GregJaffe @mgordonwsj @JeffSchogol @StevenBeynon @kristina_wong

Think of their journalistic reach. 4/5
Yes, there are soldiers on the bird app. There is opportunity for direct comms and #AskTheSCO used to demonstrate that weekly. But those we interact with have far greater amplification capability than we do.

That’s how you use Twitter for good. 5/5

Time for a weekend safety brief.

First, an end of week reflection with Colin Powell’s 13 Rules seems appropriate.

“Leadership is getting more out of people than the science of management says you can.” Image
I’ve been saying this for 20 years and I mean it. If you need some help this weekend call someone. That goes for anything from “I’m feeling depressed” to “I just got a great offer on a Camero for 0 down and 30% APR.” call someone.
If you get the urge to do something unwise, pause, ask if it’s something you really want to be remembered for, and reconsider. How many successful TikTok videos are there of someone trying to launch a bottle rocket from their backside? That’s right. Zero.
