My boss, colleague (a guy) and I, left the comfort of Abuja and were in Asaba for two whole months because of Election Petition. Let me tell you what I experienced:
1. Everybody knew I was a lawyer that came from Abuja but it didn’t matter to those men. To them, I was just meat that did not have an owner. Our assigned driver would ask my colleague to “dash him.” It’s me they were dashing like I wasn’t a whole human being.
2. Everyday, I had men harassing and stalking me in my hotel. Someone even said “I’ve been watching you”. I was stopped in the hallway countless times and made so uncomfortable. When I would sit alone, random men would invite themselves to my table and try to force me to talk.
3. In the Tribunal, right there in the middle of hearing, the man sitting behind me kept using his knee to poke my bum. I was too shocked to give him the slap I know I should have given him. I just told my boss instead.
4. When I arrived at the Tribunal every morning, there was someone’s nosey son or daddy, asking me to remove my anklet and calling me stubborn for saying no.
5. Let’s not talk about the people (not my clients) who had their own petitions, asking me to meet them in their hotel. One even offered to move me out of the one the Delta State Government put me in.
6. They would randomly hail my colleague in front of me because apparently, he was “chopping and cleaning mouth”. When I would go to his room to discuss our task, they’d say we were sleeping together and they wanted their share. My agency, taken away just like that.
7. I watched my colleague live a normal life with a little more respect sef because “the law”, but me, I was the meat. My qualification didn’t matter and the only time it did was when they would try to pick my brain to see if there was anything inside.
8. A guy who happened to go to Lawschool with me also tried to embarrass me in Asaba because he hated that I didn’t pay them any attention, and wanted to be the person to ridicule me. After the incident, he tried to be my friend and ask for my number on the flight back to Abuja.
9. I can’t even remember all of it but I was never comfortable. Only started using the gym in the second hotel we were moved to because the guys in the first hotel made it clear they wanted to “press” me.
10. Anyways, never again in my life till I die or Jesus comes.
