272 eminent citizens, consisting of 16 Judges, 123 retired bureaucrats, including 14 Ambassadors, 133 retired armed forces officers, write an open letter condemning the LoP and the Congress Party’s attempts to tarnish constitutional bodies like the Election Commission of India.

"We, the senior citizens of civil society, express our grave concern that India’s democracy is under assault, not by force, but by a rising tide of venomous rhetoric directed toward its foundational institutions. Some political leaders, instead of offering genuine policy alternative, resort to provocative but unsubstantiated accusations in their theatrical political strategy. After their attempts to tarnish the Indian Armed Forces by questioning their valour and accomplishments, and the Judiciary by questioning its fairness, Parliament, and its constitutional functionaries, now it is the turn of Election Commission of India to face systematic and conspiratorial attacks on its integrity and reputation. The Leader of Opposition, Lok Sabha, has repeatedly attacked the Election Commission, declaring that he has open and shut proof that the Election Commission is involved in vote theft and claimed that he has 100 per cent proof..." reads the letter

We have full faith in our judiciary, the Election Commission, and our executive. To raise questions on the integrity of the election commission, and to be vindictive that they will be pursued even after retirement is in extremely bad taste and it does not behive the LoP to say such things. Not only the nation but all of us stand united, and that is why the letter has been signed by us. Please be restrained in the allegations you raise because they have no merit or substance."

Stray dog menace: Supreme Court passes a slew of directions to Delhi-NCR states, MCD and NDMC to deal with the menace of stray dogs and orders creation of dog shelters across cities. Supreme Court orders authorities to pick up all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR from all localities within eight weeks and to put them in dog shelters, and no stray dog will be released back.

Supreme Court orders that all authorities to maintain record of daily stray dogs captured and detained. Supreme Court orders to make all localities free of stray dogs and says there should not be any compromise in undertaking any exercise. If any individual or organisation that comes in the way in picking stray dogs or rounding them up, we will proceed to take action against any such resistence.

Supreme Court is overruling the codified law without hearing the other side. This order will be challenged. The existing shelters in the country are run only by NGOs and private bodies. The court did not even consider the consequences of the sudden removal of stray dogs. We should have made Delhi an example of animal birth control centres..."

Vellore, Tamil Nadu | A Hindu Munnani functionary, Praveen Kumar, says, "Around 150 villagers of Kattukollai village received a notice from Syed Ali Masjid at Virinchipuram. The notice claims that village's land belongs to Waqf property...4 generations have been living in Kattukollai, they have also paid their taxes. We met the Collector and he assured us that the land belongs to the government and is not Waqf property".

Another Hindu Munnani functionary, Mahesh, says, "The Waqf Bill has passed recently, and suddenly, they have started asking for tax for land. In Vellore, many villagers are facing similar issues"
