Want a happy life?

CHANGE YOUR WAY OF THINKING:

A 20-tweet Stoic handbook πŸ‘‡

[Graphics: @itspooran]
Gratitude

❌ I have nothing to be grateful for

βœ… I am grateful I woke up today

- Gratitude for just being alive

- Gratitude for breathing in and out

- Some days that's enough, maybe it's enough every day
Comparison

❌ My friend is achieving more than me

βœ… Life is not a competition

- You're on your path, they're on theirs

- Don't get pulled away from your mission for the sake of someone else's
Time

❌ I'm bored, I wish the clock would move faster

βœ… I value every moment I have

- Seize and savour the passing moments

- Some go slow and some go fast

- But once they pass, they're gone
Death

❌ I have time, I'll live for years

βœ… I could die tomorrow

- Focus on the important things

- Be present with friends & family

- Don't waste time on frivolous bullsh*t
Comfort

❌ If I stay in my comfort zone, difficulty won't find me

βœ… If I expand my comfort zone, I will find difficulty and beat it

- Turning discomfort into comfort is a superpower

- Short term, facing discomfort gives purpose

- Long term, facing discomfort conquers fears
Doing Good

❌ If I do a favour, I expect one back

βœ… I do good deeds for their own sake

- Do favours

- Do help

- Do give

- Don't keep score
Entertainment

❌ TV, news, arguing on social media

βœ… Books, podcasts, learning on social media

- Most news is here today, gone tomorrow

- It is created to provoke a reaction (& therefore upset your tranquility)

- Be intentional with your consumption
Attachment

❌ I fear losing everything I have

βœ… I appreciate what I have but accept it is on loan from the universe

- Attachment creates tension

- Freedom comes with the dropping of attachment

- "Without this thing, I can't be happy" is a false belief
Criticism

❌ I'm useless if I get criticized

βœ… Criticism is just another opinion, their words don't touch me

- Examine criticism

- If it’s constructive, use it to improve

- If not, laugh at it
Praise

❌ I'm useless if I don't receive praise

βœ… I do my best work regardless of how it is received

- Praise is just an added judgement

- It has no bearing on your true worth

- The important thing is self-worth
Adversity

❌ I can't cope with difficulty

βœ… I seek the value in whatever happens

- We can't choose when adversity strikes

- But we can choose how we react to it

- We are often capable of more than we think
Opinion

❌ People always need to hear my take

βœ… Not everything requires my opinion

- No need to rush to judgement

- No need to always offer the judgement when it has been formed
Judgement

❌ My friend let me down, they upset me

βœ… If I am upset, the upset is in me - therefore I have the power to remove it

- We are not disturbed by events, people, things

- We are only disturbed by the views we take of them
Emotion

❌ Negative emotions are a weakness

βœ… Negative emotions can be used as a signal to change something

- Feeling instinctive emotions is inevitable

- Allowing them to result in negative actions is optional

- Stop, examine, find the root cause of the emotion
Failure

❌ Ugh, I failed - just my luck

βœ… No, not just my luck – just EVERYONE’S luck. Just Fate.

- Cursing our luck changes nothing

- If we learn, failure can lead to self improvement & increased resilience

- We're "lucky" that we have the strength within us to keep going
Fear

❌ I'm scared to try, the outcome will be bad

βœ… I need to understand what I'm afraid of and prepare as best I can

- Curiosity – What am I afraid of?

- Understanding – Is the fear justified? How could I recover from the worst outcome?

- Action – Take the first step
Regret

❌ This thing happened, and it is terrible!

βœ… This thing happened, what can I do about it

- Constantly test your mental impressions

- Removing emotional language can take the sting out of persistent worries
Discipline

❌ Discipline ruins my freedom

βœ… Discipline now means freedom later

- Discipline in diet makes you healthier

- Discipline in exercise makes you stronger

- Discipline in work makes you reliable

- Discipline opens up space for so much in life
Control

❌ I wish I could control more

βœ… I'm lucky I only control my own actions, otherwise my responsibilities would be endless

- You control your opinion, intention, desire/aversion

- In other words, whatever is your own doing

- Focus on this, accept the rest
Practice

❌ I can't change my thinking, it's not that easy

βœ… It will require effort to change my thinking, but it's worth it

- We're all "programmed" in certain ways

- It takes effort to reprogram

- How long are you going to wait before you demand a happy life for yourself?

7 cool @lizandmollie graphics accompanied by relevant philosophy quotes:

1.
"Well-being is realized by small steps, but is truly no small thing."

β€Šβ€”β€ŠZeno of Citium Image
2.
"β€œWhat progress, you ask, have I made? I have begun to be a friend to myself.”

That was indeed a great benefit; such a person can never be alone.

You may be sure that such a man is a friend to all mankind."

β€”Seneca, Letters 6.7 Image
3.
"No great thing is created suddenly, any more than a bunch of grapes or a fig.

If you tell me that you desire a fig, I answer that there must be time.

Let it first blossom, then bear fruit, then ripen."

β€”Epictetus, Discourses 1.15 Image

13 mental tools to keep "at hand" today and every day.

(Stoic perspectives to beat anxious feelings)

πŸ‘‡
1. Accept what the present is offering.

With the attitude that everything is a gift, an opportunity to learn,

problems can be seen as challenges, obstacles as tests.
2. Ask "Is this necessary?"

A lot of what we do simply isn't essential.

Does what you're doing or worrying about actually matter?

Could your time be better used elsewhere?

"When I can no longer bear your tortures I will cut off my tongue with my teeth so as not to speak."

These principled words came from someone facing imminent death.

Not a tenacious ancient philosopher as you might think.

But a 19-year-old Italian woman.

Here's her story πŸ‘‡
While most women who joined the Italian Resistance during World War II were nurses or messengers, Clorinda Menguzzato fought alongside the men.

Part of the Gherlenda partisans’ battalion, she was given the nom de guerre of β€œVeglia.”

On 8 October 1944, Menguzzato was captured.
What followed was four nights of brutal torture at the hands of the Nazis, designed to make her reveal the whereabouts of her comrades.

She refused.

9 reassuring Stoic lessons on death πŸ’€

Epictetus:
1. Neither death nor pain is to be feared, but the fear of pain or death

2. The poor body must be separated from the spirit as it was before, either now or later. Why then are you troubled if it be now? For if not now, later
Seneca:
3. We must make ready for death before making ready for life

4. Death would be a thing to dread if it could stay. But it either doesn’t come, or comes & is gone

5. What matters is not how long you live, but how well; & often living well means that you cannot live long
6. There are no ills to be suffered after death, reports that make the underworld terrible to us are mere tales

7. Let us order our minds as if we had come to the end. Let us postpone nothing. Let us balance life’s account every day.

9 Stoic Journal Prompts

(A simple approach to daily journaling)

πŸ‘‡
The following are short Stoic journal prompts you can use at different milestones in your day β€” morning, afternoon, and evening.

Covering the whole day means you’re able to prepare for what you may face, deal with events as they happen, and review how you did.
Morning:

1. What difficulties am I likely to encounter today?

2. What one thing do I most need to get done today?

3. What am I grateful for today?

Stoic thoughts for dealing with feelings of insecurity.

πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡
You can’t ease feelings of insecurity by trying to change external factors.

Your perspective of a situation is key to formulating your response.
"Man is disturbed not by things, but by the views he takes of them."

- Epictetus, Enchiridion 5
