Reminder that science and engineering require resources, and therefore under capitalist hegemony will always be somewhat ideologically captured and corrupted by profit motive.
This tweet brought to you by hearing someone uncritically repeat the idea that Moore's "Law" has been somewhat disproven by unforeseen engineering limitations. As though the slow to incremental growth in consumer technologies wasn't completely intentional.
Slowly grinding out tiny steps in technology rather than making astronomical leaps is a STRATEGY. And as capitalism asserts its hegemony globally, public funds aren't what they used to be as corporate vultures cannibalize our governments for parts.
There are no real cultural challengers to capitalism anymore, so there's no need to run a constant technological race to establish primacy. Now we're down to repression of dissent and a shell game competition between flavors of capitalist dominance.
And that's just a slight ideological dispute between powers who largely agree, which is why the culture war has started running so hot lately. There's a few different factions, and right now none are out front as strongly as some might have you believe.
You have the Evangelically flavored prosperity gospel girded corporatism of the American empire, the authoritarian kleptocracies that dominate many of the former Soviet states, or the censorious state capitalist Dengism of China.
Plus a handful of wildcard options like the nationalistic corporato-populist fascisms that have come to power in places like Brazil, India, and the Philippines. Or maybe the extrastate Silicon Valley neofeudalism of the people who have dominated the tech industry.
Heck maybe we'll even end up with a real dark horse, like an odd Balkanized combination of xenophobia and fraternalism made up of compacts patterned after the EU. Or perhaps something like the theocratic resource-monopoly driven politics of Saudi Arabia becoming ascendant.
But, well... Whoever wins? We lose. There's not one of them working towards the blend of efficient distribution and global degrowth we'll need to avoid climate collapse. Barring the technocrats making some miracle advance or an actual religious eschaton, we're boned.
Like a good 60% of our metropolises will flood out. Food will become a real issue. The crisis of refugee movement from all across the globe, including interior refugees within our imperial powers, will exacerbate many other issues. Like pandemic spread, for instance.
Now, if you know me, and my presence on this site? This might seem like an oddly dark thread for me. I'm usually quite the optimist-- a real warrior of hope. But here's the thing: I'm more of a realist than you might think, and we need to be honest about the forces we're facing.
I didn't mention any significant leftist forces in that long list of contenders, because unfortunately right now they just aren't really there. But I think we've proved in the past year and change that that kind of movement can form in a hurry.
This time last year, in the middle of a deadly plague, millions of people across the planet took to the street in numbers that made those hegemonic powers we were talking about before mess their drawers because one State-sponsored thug committed an act of unconscionable violence.
And there is unconscionable violence happening at the hands of these States and their corporate symbiotes every single day. How long until it happens again? As the comforts they placate us with start to fade through their greed and anxiety, will it be billions next time?
So, right now, TODAY build that dual power. Plant the seeds of those movements. Meet those neighbors that you will be standing in the streets besides, or who will nurse your wounds, or pay your bail, or watch your kids. Plant ACTUAL SEEDS. Learn a skill. There's lots to do.
Then, just maybe, we can put forward a coherent alternative. We can build a future where we can all live and love and have fast computers again. Where dizzying leaps in technology serve all our needs.

I really believe we can get there together. But we gotta go together, y'all.

I think all the time about how we probably could have completely nipped the pandemic last April if we had ever managed a consistent 75-80% lockdown for even just a month.
No real support for that was ever on the table with the people in power. It wouldn't have been hard, it wouldn't even have interrupted profits all that much. Instead we turned the whole globe to a charnel house so some fucking millionaire could keep making safes or whatever.
But, honestly, I don't think it's all on the people in charge. We were far too complacent to their demands, on balance. The auto plants in Detroit were shut down by wildcat strikes. We should have seen a whole lot more of that energy last year.

Hokay y'all. Bout to make a serious pivot here. Until now the plan to save money for our move this Fall involved gig delivery. Gig work is hell on my ADHD, autistic brain tho. So, I've changed the plan. I will be returning to an old seasonal job and make the money that way.
However, that means I need to make a little miniature move to get there. It's not a long drive, but it's long enough I will need more gas money than I have in order to get there. I also need some funds for living expenses to make that first payday. So, I am going to ask for help.
Just need a little bit to get thru that first part, and then you better believe I am going to pay that newfound financial stability forward. If you want to lend us the hand we need, as always you can send donations thru

Thanks for all your help, everyone.
