Twitter, it's Pride Month. And I am going to share one of my absolute favorite queer poems of the 17th century. Indeed, it's a big part of my screen name.

"To the Fair Clarinda, Imagined More Than Woman" by Aphra Behn (1/)
"TO THE FAIR CLARINDA
WHO MADE LOVE TO ME,
IMAGIN’D MORE THAN WOMAN
Fair lovely Maid, or if that Title be
Too weak, too Feminine for Nobler thee,
Permit a Name that more Approaches Truth:
And let me call thee, Lovely Charming Youth." (2/)
"This last will justifie my soft complainte,
While that may serve to lessen my constraint;
And without Blushes I the Youth persue,
When so much beauteous Woman is in view
Against thy Charms we struggle but in vain
With thy deluding Form thou giv’st us pain," (3/)
"While the bright Nymph betrays us to the Swain.
In pity to our Sex sure thou wer’t sent,
That we might Love, and yet be Innocent:
For sure no Crime with thee we can commit;
Or if we shou’d – thy Form excuses it." (4/)
"For who, that gathers fairest Flowers believes
A Snake lies hid beneath the Fragrant Leaves.
/ Thou beauteous Wonder of a different kind,
Soft Cloris with the dear Alexis join’d;
When e’er the Manly part of thee, wou’d plead
Thou tempts us with the Image of the Maid," (5/)
"While we the noblest Passions do extend
The Love to Hermes, Aphrodite the Friend." (6/6)

Happy definition-breaking Pride!

The Cold War never ended; the Republicans just decided to surrender.
I think a lot of Americans have forgotten, or never learned, that the Cold War, as bad as it was (and IT REALLY REALLY WAS esp in terms of US fp meddling!) was at least ostensibly about democracy, not just capitalism. The Republicans cared mainly about the capitalism part, tho.
So of course they don't mind that the Kremlin still stands, blatantly, for anti-democracy, because they've embraced anti-democracy so thoroughly themselves. Putin's corrupt, authoritarian capitalist state, supported by a white Christian church is their dream state, really.

If you think civil rights are "an opportunistic anti-Bernie gambit," then you're a racist, misogynistic, queerphobic, anti-disability nightmare.

Imagine thinking that Hillary Clinton's lifelong dedication to civil rights was some kind of cynical plot. This effing guy.
"I'm going to go undercover to investigate segregation academies, fight for disabled children to go to school, register minorities to vote, and take on putting brown and black kids in prison, ALL IN MY 20s, as a cynical ploy for future gain!" --Hillary Clinton, in Matt Y's world.
Say what you will about Hillary Clinton, her dedication to civil rights was very real and manifested in very concrete action from her college days forward. Her anti-rape work, her contributions to children's legal rights, her work with the LSC--she was on the path early on.

There's a lot going on in this article, but it's striking how the informal code of silence enables abuse among the (allegedly) decentralized and non-hierarchal Southern Baptists just as much as the rigid hierarchy of Roman Catholicism does: washingtonpost.com/religion/2021/…
"With no pope or hierarchy and a democratic system of voting, its system is designed to protect its own leaders and the institution by generally not publicly criticizing one another." So much for soul freedom. Image
And that's also strikingly similar to the People of Praise culture that also enables sexual abuse and punishes survivors for speaking out that the WaPo published about yesterday:

For the record, I'd like to see public university education in the US become financially accessible to everyone. Free tuition would be great, though not the only way to achieve this.
That said, what is the plan to deal with the outsize cost of certain collegiate athletics?
In most countries, there is nothing like the quasi-professional football and basketball run out of major public universities in the US. As an example, football at UGA in the last pre-Covid year: dawgnation.com/football/uga-r…
For reference, the University of Georgia's president has a total compensation package of over $900,000. The head football coach has a salary (just the salary, not total compensation) of over $6,900,000. See more coaches here: bizjournals.com/atlanta/news/2…

Whew. This story about the group that Amy Coney Barrett belongs to is incredibly disturbing.

washingtonpost.com/investigations…
A couple of things jump out. "Women in the Facebook group recalled childhood warnings from parents and teachers that wearing revealing clothing would tempt the opposite sex. They were responsible for warding off sexual advances from men, the women said they were told."
That right there is classic victim-blaming, and although they are different groups, is functionally identical to the philosophy of the Bill Gothard IBLP stuff that the Duggars push. It's a huge invitation to sexual abusers.

So what major media outlet will be the one to figure out the astroturfing that is driving these "grassroots" anti-CRT protests at local school board meetings?
