Thoughts re: #DeleteFacebook

#DeleteFB to silence dissenting opinions

#DeleteFB to fight technocratic authoritarianism

are borne of competing ideologies but advocate for the same outcome.

The question is, which effect is deleting Facebook more likely to have?...
Deleting Facebook to silence dissent is somewhat redundant in its primary utility given FB already employs mechanisms to censor.

Then again, if the point of deleting is to take ownership of your information consumption (v. censoring others), that's a noble choice...
It's also likely that some intend a not-so-mass exodus to serve as a warning to Zuckerberg et al, i.e. "If you don't censor others MORE, I'm going to leave!"

& if he were smart, he would call their bluff, primarily because kowtowing to extortion only leads to more extortion...
Were he to accommodate in reaction to the threat, he would likely lose more power attempting to placate the extremists than he would directly via the user reduction caused by letting them walk.

B/c it's not a simple, unilateral's a power *transfer*...
which could result in him handing control to a group that might (eventually) disable and overtake him.

Not ideal for Z but could be a boon to pro-censor.

If not, the status quo for pro-censor is life a world where the info knob is dialed up and down by someone else...
This brings us to #DeleteFacebook to fight technocratic authoritarianism

Anti-tech-auth may join the pro-censors (most of whom are not serious) in deleting, thinking user count drop reduces Zuckerberg et al's immediate power & influence.

And, at best, that's marginally true..
But bruising Z's ego (realistic worst-case) might not be worth the cost of losing access to the "open" (I know, I know) platform through which to disseminate CTAs/ideas for any cause...Unless orchestrated at an unprecedented scale (to cripple vs. bruise)...
& with an alt platform at the ready (which has thus far been unsuccessful at said scale)

The ultimate effect would likely be limiting their own immediate reach.

AKA Self-censorship...
So Deleting FB helps no one and we are impotent but to let Zuckerberg et al rule the world and make all the decisions for everyone - unchecked - forever, right?

Maybe not.

If the pro-censor and anti-tech-auth crowds BOTH deleted FB simultaneously and en masse...
and really hit Zuckerberg et al where it hurts by putting a serious dent in active users, both camps would get something they want.

Pro-censor would get reduced "misinfo" spreading and put Z on notice. Anti-tech-auth could see a destabilization in Z's power...
...which could ripple into other important areas.

The important part is that Zuckerberg et al's capacity to pull civil society's strings at will would be reduced, which would be good for both camps...
The only reason it couldn't work is if both camps were so intransigent that they would rather cripple their own cause than knee-cap the entity holding them both back.

(I could go all North and Kings Landing and White Walkers here but I'll leave that to someone else...)
If there's a "Reset" at hand, it might be one in the most basic sense wherein the people band together to wrestle some power back from the elite.

Once that happens, it is up to causes to mobilize & solve whatever probs the disruption raises (comm, platform, etc)...
There's no top-down change OTW. The world is working best for the people at the top who have consolidated the power and currently hold all of the cards.

RN you're FB's customer, product, & source of their influence?

What if you said, "No"?

What if millions said, "No"?...
Maybe they'd have no choice but to hand over some of those cards.

It sure would be interesting to see what would happen if they did. 🤔

I wish one - just one- of the 320 people who liked this letter demanding that unvaccinated children be kept out of school for 10 days for being a contact, could tell me what problem it solves.

I asked.

No substantive answers yet.

Withholding ed is hardly a virtuous position.
Watching ppl revel in the prospect of discriminating against kids is some really dark stuff.
This is the best I got so far. And it’s not good.

This is the kind of reaction you get for daring to ask people to justify their support of denying kids in-person school.

Covid messaging has triggered (and co-signed) a really ugly, base side of a lot of people.

I do not have a >1/200 chance of dying of COVID if I get it.

The JH calc in Nature says it's closer to 4 in 10 million, or 1 in 2.5M.

@VincentRK - How do you justify making these kinds of abjectly false assertions? Noble lie?

Serious question.
It's possible that you think you're doing something good & that it's better to be 'cautious' and overstate risk, but instilling irrational fear is unhealthy.

Encourage people to vaccinate but don't lie to them. It's infantilizing, coercive, harmful and degrades your credibility.
And, yes, the 4 in 10 million is the absolute rate of mortality in my geo location and my pop subgroup for the last 3 weeks - not just C19 deaths presumably - but that gives a far more accurate picture of individualized risk.

Victimhood is alluring to a lot of people because it does 3 things:

1. Attracts sympathy/support/validation
2. Insulates from criticism
3. Defers or redirects responsibility

Unfortunately, while those things can *feel* good, they don't do much to change one's circumstances...
Change requires taking responsibility...which erases most of the above benefits.

When you are no longer a victim, you can be held responsible for your choices and are vulnerable to criticism.

And for a lot of people, that's just too emotionally risky...
The irony is that progression of the victim mindset is not just entitlement to the above, but that other ppl are obligated to fix your prob for you...

which causes misery, resentment, confusion when ppl decline.

So you feel bad anyway...& you're stuck in your circumstances.

We can’t invoke the precautionary principle with masks because they haven’t been studied.

And they should be.

B/c proactive parents sent their kids masks to a lab and the results were disturbing.…
The hygiene hypothesis has been invoked to counter suggested harm from keeping bacteria-laden cloth over kids’ noses/mouths 8 hrs/day, as well as claims of no increases in strep/inf?

How would we know?

How many local increases haven’t been reported?…
As for the hygiene hypothesis, typical environmental exposure vs. contrived antiseptic sterility is a good thing.

But it’s disingenuous to claim that direct oral/mucosal/dermatological contact + inhalation for prolonged periods of time does not qualify as “typical exposure”.

Watching Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters respond to Mark Zuckerburg’s mind-bogglingly audacious request to use ‘Another Brick in the Wall 2’ in some Instagram ad w/

“Fuck you. I won’t be a party to this bullshit”

was easily the best part of my day.

Watch the whole thing. He nails it
Attempting to co-opt a classic anti-authoritarian anthem to promote an org that openly supports and engages in censorship is just un-fucking-believable.

“We don’t need no thought control”, indeed.
And as a totally bizarre and 100% true coincidence, my daughter *just* sat down on the couch next to me wearing this shirt:

Well played, universe. 👊
