Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai ep.40: tons of great action cuts, but it’s another episode that would’ve been better if it rushed through less stuff. 3.75/5 #DragonQuest #ep40

In the manga, Popp specifies that he’s only ever heard about Flazzard’s Finger Flare Bombs and never got the chance to see them in action before trying the technique out himself (I get the feeling this was in response to reader complaints)

When admiring Chiu’s guts, in the manga Crocodine refers to him as チビ/chibi/“shorty”, but the anime leaves this out. The anime likewise changed Leona calling Dai chibi in ep.1/2 (to the less insulting 小さい/small). Can you really not say chibi on TV anymore?

The eternally popular strategy of beating people by dropping them down a big fissure

“Behemoth” here is a translation of デクの坊/deku no bō, literally a wooden doll, but by extension a stupid or useless person (the same way we say “dummy” in English). This is the source of Deku’s name in MHA. Here, Hyunckel just seems to be comparing the living castle to a doll

(“Behemoth” itself of course means a giant, after the biblical monster, and a staple of Final Fantasy and other RPGs. Possibly the CR translators mistook deku no bō for dekabutsu, a word for “giant” used by Popp to refer to the castle earlier on)

“Essence” in this case is a translation of 極意/goku’i, the secret of a skill or art. Yes, just like 身勝手の極意/Migatte no Goku’i

Perhaps I’m picky, but it bugs me that Popp identifies the Flazzard-style armor before the audience gets a good look at them (in the manga it’s the other way around). Later, Popp immediately comments on the castle stopping, even though it’s not visibly less mobile than before.

The spelling/localization used for Myst’s two techniques this episode match those used in the Dai kanzenban. For the first, “Byut Deathstringer” is a fairly straightforward rendering of the katakana name (don’t ask me what “byut” is supposed to mean)

For the second, “decimation field” is a reasonably direct translation of 滅砕陣, while 闘魔 is the standard prefix for Myst/Hyunckel’s dark aura techniques (闘 here seems short for 闘気/fighting spirit/aura), which seems to be why it’s localized as “dark puppetry aura”

They got to show a surprising amount of red blood this time around. It’s pretty much on par with the manga.

A nice callback/inversion of Hyunckel catching Maam at the end of ep.17
