This heat is killing my brain cells. I will be a congealed blob by noon and return to slime by 2 ☀️
The way my children are behaving right now i welcome it tbh
We’re on day 3 of 10. I now know could never, ever, ever have done Big Brother. Ever.
I just swam in a pool I can’t see the bottom of as it’s been so well used for 3 days. Grim. But worth it as body temp is now 10 degrees cooler. Ordered chlorine tabs & ate an ice lolly.

Incredibly proud to be on this expert panel to provide the first international Consensus Statement and recommendations for ensuring healthcare systems meet the long-term needs of people with HIV 🧵 Image
It’s been 10 years since we’ve known that people with HIV on effective treatment can expect a near normal life expectancy

Yet in that time global health systems have hardly pivoted toward treating HIV as the chronic long-term, health condition it now is
To date there are ZERO global standards for health systems to monitor for HIV:

➡️Quality of life
➡️Non-communicable diseases (only TB STIs and Hepatitis)
➡️Mental health
➡️Met and unmet needs…

AstraZeneca challenge Round 2️⃣

Self-isolating (again) after daughter produced the most positive LFT ever this morning following a case at school. She’s asymptomatic.

My LFT: negative
Wife’s LFT: faint positive

PCRs for all 3 pending... 🤞

* Not that Ding Image
Wife has mild symptoms: lethargic, headache, sore throat.

Holiday to Scotland cancelled 😞

Our primary concern is protecting this little dude ❤️

4yo son with ATR-X Syndrome ⤵️ Image
Plot thickens: wife has now produced a definitively negative LFT

So there’s still hope 🤞

Will behave myself now & wait patiently for PCR results........

*NEW* Vaccine surveillance report

Updated estimates of averted infections & deaths due to vaccination programme.

{Modelled, England only, to June 25}

🦠 8.1 MILLION infections prevented
☠️ 30 THOUSAND deaths prevented…
This model assumes absence of all other non-pharma interventions (eg lockdowns)

Meaning if we had no vaccine, and cases went up in May, the govt did nothing to mitigate

Of course this a very unlikely scenario - in fact the government delayed the Step 4 Roadmap by a month...
What is striking about this model is it shows the potential impact of the Delta variant if we DIDN’T have vaccines 💉

As promised, a thread 🧵 of some positive & interesting news I’ve seen lately...

1. Infection fatality rate. The team at @MRC_BSU who’ve been nowcasting across the pandemic now estimate an IFR of less than 1 in 1000.

▶️ 0.085% (0.077%-0.093%)…
This is the lowest IFR yet and still slightly creeping downward...

It is *20-fold lower* than the peak IFR of 1.7%

Vaccines save lives 💉
2. COVID in Schools

Data from the Education Settings Survey showed low prevalence of COVID-19 in school-aged children (on July 1)

🖍️3 in 1,000 primary pupils with a confirmed COVID-19 case
🖊️5 in 1,000 secondary pupils with a confirmed COVID-19 case

My local authority is offering 2nd dose of PFIZER at walk in clinics after just 3 weeks. Will there be a reduction in efficiency? Don’t I need to wait 8-12 weeks?

ANSWER: NO. You can get PFIZER after 3 weeks!
Pfizer is an mRNA vaccine which reaches peak effectiveness after 1 dose very quickly.

There is very little to gain from waiting longer. Much more immunity to gain from a 2nd dose.…
The 21 day interval for Dose 2 is approved by MHRA and FDA, and has been since December 2020. This isn’t a new change.

Trial efficacy data supports this.…
