Wow, everyone interested in learning about the Klan today. Good! It's a part of our history that's super important. Here are some things to read (thread):
On the 1920s Klan, which is the biggest one (4 million ish) and the one you probably remember from school: Kathleen Blee, Women of the Klan; @NancyMacLean5 Behind the Mask of Chivalry; @kelly_j_baker on religion in the 2nd era
On the Civil Rights era check out David Cunningham, Klansville USA
And guess what the Klan is still with us and quite active. To see the throughline to the present, Bring the War Home and then @chick_in_kiev Culture Warlords, @milleridriss Hate in the Homeland

Missing and stolen military weapons and materiel (fancy word for explosives and other gear) have landed in the hands of paramilitary white power groups since the 1980s. The Pentagon has been trying to solve this since about 1986, & yet here we are, with the violent right growing
...there's a chapter about this in Bring the War Home, but the story doesn't end in 1996 when the book does--see missing C-4 at Twentynine Palms last year, for instance...
And call me a naive civilian, but I kind of think that the missing military-grade rifles and machine guns are concerning, too...

Hey academics--about the situation in #Colombia, from historian Lina Britto: "the Colombian state has engaged in multiple human rights abuses and violations since April 28th. We invite you to sign this letter if you agree with its content”—letter is to President Biden. (1)
Looking for professors/scholar signatures only for now. Please RT docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI… (2)
Lina Britto, btw, is not on social but her credentials are here history.northwestern.edu/people/faculty…

"and always there are the children

there will be children in the heat of day
there will be children in the cold of winter

children like a quilted blanket
are welcomed in our old age

children like a block of ice to a desert sheik
are signs of status in our youth
we feed the children with our culture
that they might understand our travail

we nourish the children on our gods
that they may understand respect

we urge the children on the tracks
that our race will not fall short
but our children are not ours
nor we theirs they are future we are past

Deleted an earlier tweet about this after constructive feedback, and came back to clarify. There's a story going around about a member of the Capitol Police having a worn, printout version of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. (1)
The Protocols are, absolutely, an antisemitic text, and have done an enormous amount of particular and specific damage to Jewish people, not just in the US but worldwide. (2)
This book has been around for more than a century and has been used to inflict antisemitic damage, to call for antisemitic hate crimes, and to bolster antisemitic conspiracy theories (3)

Quick primer: yes, the FBI has, over about a century, used its resources unequally against the right and the left. It has overwhelmingly targeted the left. (1)
In the early days, J. Edgar Hoover focused on anarchism and bombings (see @beverlygage) and then on communism (see @RobinDGKelley) as principal threats. (2)
Under the COINTELPRO (counter-intelligence program), FBI agents used a host of tactics that are now illegal, including not only undercover informants but deliberately provoking violence).(3)

Just in case anybody needs a refresher, as The Guardian recently reported, of nearly 900 politically motivated acts of domestic terror since 1994, only one attack by an anti-fascist led to fatalities, and in that case, the one person killed was the perpetrator.
“Over the same time period, American white supremacists & other rightwing extremists have carried out attacks that left at least 329 victims dead…" 21 victims killed in leftwing attacks since 2010 , & 117 victims of rightwing attacks in that same period–nearly 6 times as much."
"Attacks inspired by the Islamic State and similar jihadist groups, in contrast, killed 95 people since 2010, slightly fewer than rightwing extremists.... More than half of these victims died in a single attack on a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in 2016.”
