There's a fight going on to figure out how to give credit to companies that buy carbon offsets. The outcome of could have big impact on global emissions.

@Jess_Shankleman & I suggest one way to resolve it.…
@Jess_Shankleman Why care?

Corporations are responsible the vast majority of global emissions. Their consumers emissions, called Scope 3, are also something they have to reduce to net zero, if they are to be a part of the solution and not the problem.
Most companies currently don't have a climate plan. A small fraction has a climate plan, but it's not been verified by a respectable third party. A smaller fraction still has their plans approved by @sciencetargets.

The transition of the electricity sector is a thing of beauty.

🧵on @IRENA's latest outlook…
Yes, electricity is only a fraction (about 25%) of global emissions. But the transition is likely to have much bigger impact, as electrification of other sectors speeds up.
IRENA's 1.5C scenario needs about $131 trillion going into clean energy between now and 2050.

Seems a lot until you realize that ~$98 trillion could be realized based on current net-zero policies.

Moving an additional $23 trillion is no small feat, but it's not $131 trillion.

That nightmare is now playing out. Feels worse because the West is in vaccine euphoria.
