#TodayinHistory The 2nd Battle of Guam begins in 1944 as the US forces recapture the Pacific Island after a month long battle, following Japan's capture of this island in 1941, after Pearl Harbor. One of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific that saw around 21,000 killed.
The American forces initially had a tough time on Guam, lack of amphibious vehicles, they had to wade ashore from the reef, right into Japanese fire. Most of them were killed on the beaches.
However as the American forces secured the beachheads, the Japanese withdrew into the inlands, that had thick jungles. Along with the rain this made it hard for the Americans, however by 2-4 August they managed to break through.
By August 10, the American forces had managed to secure Guam, as all the major Japanese officers committed suicide. It would later become a key Allied base in the Pacific War.

The aim of Operation Valkyrie was to wrest control from the Nazis, and make a peace treaty with the Allies, that would end a war, which was turning out to be a disaster for Germany.
More than 7000 were arrested, and around 5000 executed, some of them though had nothing to do with the plot, but more for settling political scores. Most of the chief conspirators including Stauffenberg were tried and executed.

Interesting aspect, of the 3 founders of Intel, only Robert Noyce was purely into Physics, Gordon Moore was a chemist, wile Andy Grove was a chemical engineer. Noyce also invented the IC with Jack Kilby, and Arthur Rock was the one who helped em find investors. Image
Gordon Moore was a Phd in Chemistry from CalTech, and he joined his fellow alumnus William Shockley at Shockley Semiconductors , before becoming part of the Traitorous 8 who left the company, thanks to Shockley's erratic and whimsical behavior.
