As you may have heard, @amnesty has released mat-detect. an amazing tool for detecting whether your device has evidence that it may have been touched by the Pegasus spyware. In this thread I am going to tell you about my experience and lessons using this tool one iOS. (1/13)
Before we begin, it is absolutely vital that you only download utilities and instructions from their official sources. So lets start with the links: (2/13)……
I am going to be discussing my experience using mvt-ios on a non jailbroken iOS 14.6 device. First I made a brand new encrypted local backup with a simple passphrase. The reason you want an encrypted backup is because non-encrypted or iCloud backups are much smaller. (3/13)
On your Mac, you will need home-brew, XCode, and python3. This is why I recommend using an Intel Mac rather than a brand new M1 Mac- because installing and dealing with Rosetta and python upgrades can be a hassle if you have never dealt with it before. (4/13)
Also, I recommend not skipping any steps in the instructions, especially this one (5/13)
OK, now I made a complete and total encrypted backup, which took way longer than I remembered it taking last time. That is because it occurs at USB 2.0 speeds, even on a USB-C 3.1 cable. Not kidding.…
This step (installing libmobiledevice utils) is considered optional, but it actually will save you some time and steps later if you choose to do it: (7/13)
in fact, using this method means you can skip the Finder / iTunes backup method and just use this method: (8/13)
Now it is time to decrypt your backup: (9/13)…
I went ahead and backed up my decrypted backup to an external SSD (not necessary) and then began the check: (10/13)…
You will want to run the check against the STIX2 file, which I believe is being updated daily to eliminate false positives. (11/13)
You will see some "Warnings" which are not too alarming, and hopefully no warnings that cause you concern: (12/13)
A huge thank you to everyone involved in this project, especially @amnesty fr releasing their tools.

(13/13). I think
Post script: The tool is *NOT* called "mat-detect" or even "mvt-detect" - it is simply "MVT":

My apologies for that horrible typo!
post-post script : follow @kyrah for a bit more concise instructions ;-)
