The second Outside for Beginners is up! This one is about having a good experience on your first camping trip (or your first camping trip in a while).…
When I dug into other online camping resources, I noticed there was a lot of *how* and not much *why*. There are beginner guides that take for granted that camping is great, but I think a lot of people aren't there yet, so I tried to zoom out. WHY would you want to sleep on dirt?
The thing is, if you google "how to camp" or "camping 101," a lot of what comes up is... shopping lists. With affiliate links. Which, naturally, recommend a lot of specialized gear that may not be necessary.

Hi friends!

Every year I talk to people who tell me wistfully that they think nature is beautiful, but that they’re “not outdoorsy.” They’d love to spend more time outside (or at least try it) but have no idea how to start.

Plus, they’re embarrassed to mess up.
There's this insidious myth that to enjoy something, you should be good at it. And conversely, to enjoy something without being good at it is foolish.

(Obviously I hate this myth. It keeps people out of sports, art, writing, dance--all beautiful things that they could enjoy.)
