Something else endemic ystdy. Police instinctively covering up for other police, incident after incident. "not what i heard" "his word against yours" "i didn't hear him say that, did you?" "riot police? he didn't say that." "manhandle? i didn't hear that." Nice culture. #TOpoli
It was like breathing for them, with smirks. Who's creating the us vs them tension? The disgustingly arrogant, smirking, violent, raging, power hungry police we saw on display yesterday. i've met some really great, caring cops. Who take the "serve" part seriously. Not yesterday.
There will doubtless be no internal consequences for racist Mike, a senior officer who abused a volunteer providing masks because she was black, for the officers who assaulted me and so many others. So we will have to force consequences through the legal system.
Adding enormous costs that will grow as suits meander glacially through the system, ending with a settlement in ten yrs. All. Completely. Unnecessary. 14-17 people. You'd think they were confronting international assassins, but no! just people who committed the crime of poverty.

i just really fundamentally do not get it. it's not like it's 1847 and there's massive scarcity and not enough food to feed people. we live in an age of MASSIVE ABUNDANCE AND WASTE but we can't make sure people can eat and keep food over their heads. WHEN IT IS SO EASY TO DO.
not only do we have the means to produce to much, we DO produce too much. we are so lumpy. and politicians are doing nothing to smooth out the lumps. they are making it lumpier.
i obviously should not say politicians. i should say our political process - is adversarial yet bureaucratic, by necessity i guess but it's a terrible way to try to function in a crisis and during a period of massive evolutionary change.

I was the first non-resident on the scene after this happened (I think) and this comment fails to capture the resulting terror + despair of ppl living here, trying to stay warm, fed + Covid free. I saw S2H arrive and not speak to a single resident. We see who we want. #toronto
Imagine you are outside, and dreading another winter, and ppl are actively trying to find solutions, someone lights your home on fire and the discussion is how unsafe that structure was. I mean, come on. Is this a PR war or about real well being? We know the answer.
The moment I communicated this, volunteers from @esn_to were on the scene, all of us trying to figure out what had happened and if everyone was ok and dreading exactly this response. A full 36 hours later S2H was there. 👍 who’s really taking the duty of care seriously here?

I have never experienced anything like the rage directed at me this week, dressed in a black hoodie, wearing a black face mask, trying to advocate for others’ rights and well being. People sneered at me with open contempt. I could not understand it. Then I realized,
... as someone handed me a survival kit, that they assumed I was homeless and that’s how they looked at and treated homeless people. I’ve lived a life where people just do not speak to each other, look at each other, treat each other that way. And when you see it, you realize ...
... how quickly, easily, dehumanizations happens. Just by painting people as a nuisance, a problem, a drain on resources, any broad strokes, this language dehumanizes them and makes it possible for people to treat them without respect. That means micromanagement, ridiculous rules
